Dl.NO. 3ltll) 17 845-2611 Page 12/The Battalion/Friday, October 17, 1986 Sports Watch out for wounded Bears By Ken Sury Sports Editor Saturday, Oct. 18,9 a.m.: “Calling all cars. Calling all cars. Be on the lookout for a group of Bears, wearing green and gold clothes and believed headed from Waco toward College Station. Analysis The Bears are believed to be wounded and must be approached with extreme caution. “They are considered armed and dangerous.” Oct. 18, 2:30 p.m.: “Attention: Bears have been sighted in Kyle Field. Aggies are gathering at opposite end. It looks like a Fight may break out.” Yes indeed, and it should be an all-out Southwest Conference battle when Baylor, 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the SWC, and Texas A&M, 4-1 and 2-0, tangle on Kyle Field Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a regionally televised game. Four of the last five games be tween these two teams have been de cided by less than a touchdown and there’s every reason to expect this game will go down right to the final second. A&M will be looking to avenge last year’s 20-15 defeat in Waco — its only SWC defeat en route to the Cot ton Bowl. Baylor, meanwhile, will be out to prove it’s a contender for the SWC championship after last week’s 27-21 loss toSMU. Most sports writers expect this game to be a defensive battle. The statistics seem to indicate this as A&M leads the SWC in pass defense and total defense and Baylor leads the conference in rushing defense. Both teams also have high-pow ered offenses, although A&M didn’t exhibit it in last week’s 19-7 win over Houston. The Bears, led by senior quarterback Cody Carlson, lead the conference in passing and total of fense. Neither defense will be able to stop the other’s offense, but the team that contains the other the best will win. And that may be decided in the matchup between A&M’s receiv ing corps and Baylor’s defensive sec ondary. Baylor boasts an experienced sec ondary led by All-America free safety Thomas Everett and left cor- nerback Ron Francis. A&M senior wide receiver Shea Walker will be respecting the Bear secondary. “The thing that they do is play very good technically,” Walker said. “They make little, if any, mistakes and they have the ability to control the game from the defensive second ary.” Walker, whose 19 catches this sea son move him into fifth on the A&M career receiving list with 77, said the game will come down to who can ex ecute better. “It’s just mostly us against them,” Walker said. “For us to beat them, A&M flanker Rod Harris heads upfield with Texas Tech players in pursuit. The success of A&M’s receivers against the Baylor secondary may he a key factor in Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. game.
