about bug
AUSTIN (AP) — Former Gov.
Bill Clements said Tuesday he
knows nothing about a bugging inci
dent in the office of one of his cam
paign officials and doesn’t want to
talk about it.
Clements also declined to com
ment about a Fort Worth private de
tective’s refusal to take a he detector
test. The detective, Gary Morphew,
discovered the electronic bug in the
office of Clements’ campaign strate
gist Karl Rove.
Morphew said Monday he refused
to take the test for personal reasons
but wouldn’t elaborate, the Dallas
Morning News reported Tuesday.
“I have only one thing to say
about this,” Clements said. “I know
nothing about it. I knew nothing
about it. I know nothing about the
sweep or the search or even that it
was suspected. And I still don’t know
anything about it.
“It’s under investigation, and I
have no comment.”
George Bayoud, Clements’ cam
paign manager, said, “We asked him
(Morphew) to take the test. He told
me that he was going to take it last
Thursday.”
Reggie Bashur, spokesman for
the Clements campaign office, said
Monday the FBI asked Bayoud to
ask Morphew to take the test and the
detective agreed.
Morphew reported finding a
small, black listening device Oct. 5
behind a framed needlepoint in the
Austin office of Rove, a top political
consultant for Clements.
FBI probes
fraud deal,
paper says
WASHINGTON (AP) —The FBI
is investigating what role Texas Lt.
Gov. Bill Hobby, U.S. Rep. Mike An
drews and other officials may have
played in allegedly fraudulent land
deals near Houston, a Washington
newspaper said Tuesday.
The real estate ventures in ques
tion included shopping plazas, of
fices, condominiums and storage
buildings offered as tax-shelter in
vestments between 1983 and 1985,
the Washington Times reported in
its Tuesday editions.
The FBI’s investigation centers on
whether project developers put up
the investment fees for Hobby, An
drews, state Land Commissioner
Garry Mauro and other officials to
become limited partners in ex
change for using their influence, un
identified sources told the Times.
The FBI was also trying to deter
mine whether the developers in
flated property appraisals to boost
bank loans and if they received kick-
backs from construction companies,
the newspaper said.
Some builders, lenders and inves
tors had filed lawsuits to collect
money on the projects.
