The Astros picked up right where Ithey left off in the set ies opener, ■squandering one scoring chance af- ler another until finally breaking ■through in the seventh. Pinch-hitter lleny Puhl singled to lead off. He Inas (breed at second on Hatcher’s Iground ball, and Hatcher went to ■second on Bill Doran’s slow roller to Ifirst. Garner followed with a tun- scoring single to center. With one out in the second, Kevin Bass doubled to the wall in left-cen ter. Jose Cruz then hit a line drive back to Ojeda, who deflected it to ward shortstop. Cruz was aboard with an infield hit, and Bass went to third. Ashby followed with a checked-swing bouncer in front of the plate. Ojeda fielded the ball and heat Bass to the plate. Hatcher cost the Astros another chance with a baserunning blunder in the third inning. With one out, he iggies (continued from page 7) Opponents. The two quarterbacks, plong with Tate and Hood have lombined for 971 yards rushing in [heir first four games. Unfortunately for the 1-3 Gou bars, their opponents have totaled jilmost 1,500 yards on the ground, as jvell as 579 more yards through the it. Davis attributes much of the Cou- tavs' offensive woes to an inex- cerienced offensive line that starts bne freshman, three sophomores Ind one junior. But Davis added ■hat he thought the line has come a ■png way, especially after last week’s 7-J3 loss to Baylor. “I think Baylor showed us a lot of lifferent looks,” Davis said. “A cou ple of guys got their very first taste of what Southwest Conference foot ball is all about.” But Kelm said the Aggies are by no means taking the Cougars lightly or looking ahead to next weekend’s game with Baylor. “I don’t think that (looking ahead to Baylor) is a problem,” Kelm said. “As much trouble as Houston lifts given us in the past, we know this is a big ballgame for us. We need a win.” In much the same fashion as last year’s Cotton Bowl season, the A&M defense has been this team’s strong point, especially over the last three games. And the unsung hero of that defense has undoubtedly been Kelm, who last year led the defense in tackles and currently trails Johnny Holland by only four tackles. But for Kelm, a civil engineer ma jor from Corpus Christi, publicity SMILE FOR YOUR FAMILY’S GENERAL DENTAL CARE 29 CLEANING, EXAM & X-RAYS ‘Call For Appointment I • Dental Insurance Accepted • Emergency Walk Ins Welcome • Evening Appointments Available • Nitrous Oxide Available ! • Complete Family Dental Care • On Shuttle Bus Route I . Backman caught the ball on the run in center field for one out as Hatcher rounded second base, and he threw to first base, dou bling off Hatcher, to end the inning. He had a lot of public ity going into last year and this year too. “But I also think a lot of the pub licity he gets comes from how well the defense plays as a whole.” When asked if the Cougars had a specific area with which they could hurt the Aggies, Davis replied, “Not really. We are just going to line up and play the best we can. A&M has a tremendous defense. . . . The only thing we can do is play our best.” The Aggies, of course, will be doing their best to break the Hous ton jinx.
