White offers to take lie test over bugging AUSTIN (AP) — Gov. Mark White volunteered Thursday to take a lie detector test as he reiterated that neither lie nor his staff had any thing to do with the electronic bug found in the office of his opponent’s campaign consultant. An electronic sweep detected the ling Sunday in the Austin office of Karl Rove, top strategist for GOP candidate Bill Clements. Officials said the sweep was conducted be cause information tfiey thought was secret had been leaked. A matchbook-sized radio trans mitter was found behind a picture on a wall near Rove’s desk tele phone. The FBI and the Texas De partment of Public Safety are inves tigating. White said he told his staff to ask DPS Col. Jim Adams to take what ever action is necessary to get to the bottom of it as quickly as possible. Use of listening devices without court orders or the knowledge of those whose conversations are fieing monitored is a felony under both state and federal law. Seeking to dispel rumors that they planted the bug themselves, top Clements campaign officials said they will take lie detector tests to prove their innocence. Reggie Bashur, Clements’ cam paign spokesman, reiterated that the GOP side is making no claims that White or his staff was behind the bugging. “If the governor of Texas says he and his stall had nothing to do with it. you have to believe that,” Bashur said. “We have never accused them of anything.” But he said that “our political opposition would be the group to most benefit” from any sto len information. White said the Republicans had no valid reason to suspect anyone was surreptitiously listening in. Barge fire still blazing on 3rd day DEER PARK (AP) The Coast Guard reopened a mile- long stretch of the Houston Ship Channel to one-way traffic Thursday while firefighters con tinued to battle a stubborn, 3-day- old chemical blaze. Also, a body was found floating under a pier close to where there was an explosion that started the fire, the Coast Guard said. The body had not been positively identified. Seven workers were injured in the fire and two explosions on the Barge Hollywood 3003 early Tuesday during a transfer of a gasoline product to another barge, which did not catch fire, said Lia Debettencourt, a Coast Guard ensign. The cause had not yet been de termined, officials said. 4- Restaurant Delicious Dinner Specials Every Night 4.50 (Includes Egg Roll, Soup & Fried Rice) We have 2 Party Rooms And We Would Like To Serve Your Next Large Group!
