Test results
awaited on
office bug
AUSTIN (AP) — The agent in
charge of the Austin FBI office said
Wednesday that investigators hope
to know by Friday results of prelimi
nary tests on the electronic bug
found in the office of a Bill Clements
campaign official.
FBI agent Byron Sage said the de
vice was received by an FBI labo
ratory in Washington, D.C., on
Tuesday. There it will undergo ex-
aminion and Fingerprint tests.
“We’re trying to determine every
thing . . . who the manufacturer was,
the capabilities of the device, its so
phistication,” Sage said.
The bug was found Sunday in the
office of Karl Rove, strategist for
Clements’ campaign.
During an interview in Houston,
where he made a speech Wednes
day, Clements refused to comment.
One of those interviewed
Wednesday was a newspaper re
porter who asked questions which
Rove and Clements’ campaign man
ager say triggered their decision to
look for a bug.
Attlesey said he told the FBI and
DPS that he obtained the informa
tion in an on-the-record interview
with Harris Diamond of New York,
White’s political consultant. Di
amond has said the information was
readily available from television sta
tions and political professionals.
Firefighters try
to contain
barge fire
DEER PARK (AP) — Firefighters
worked Wednesday to stop an in
tense chemical blaze from spreading
farther into the Houston Ship Chan
nel, stranding at least 17 ships that
were unable to leave or enter that
part of the waterway.
Tanks and equipment surround
ing the burning barge were satu
rated with water and foam to pre
vent the blaze from reaching the
dock, officials said.
“Our strategy is to continue to
contain the fire and let it burn itself
out,” said Stephen W. Miles, presi
dent of Intercontinental Terminals
Co. The vessel was moored at the
company’s dock when the fire and
explosions erupted early Tuesday.
An undetermined amount of the
barge’s cargo, a gasoline additive
called methyl tertiary butyl ether,
leaked into the channel as the front
end sank, Miles said.
Coast Guard Ensign Lia Debetten-
court said the fire began at 4 a.m. on
the Barge Hollywood 3003 during a
transfer of the gasoline product to
another barge, which did not catch
fire.
Coast Guard spokesman Mark
Kennedy said the cause of the fire
and explosions had not been deter
mined.

Bryan restaurant managers
unsure about smoking law
By Vickie Faour
Reporter
Bryan restaurant owners and
managers have mixed feelings
about a new smoking ordinance
that requires restaurants to desig
nate smoking and non-smoking
areas.
Jim Talbot, manager of Casa
Tomas, 4300 Texas Ave., said his
business already has had prob
lems with the new ordinance,
which went into effect Oct. 1.
“Saturday night after the foot
ball game, it was awfully busy
here and we almost had our first
fist-light,” Talbot said. “In the
rush, a smoker was accidentally
seated in the non-smoking sec
tion. After the man finished eat
ing, he lit up a cigar.”
A non-smoker complained and
both men began yelling, Talbot
said.
.“We ended up having to pick
up the tab in order to keep
peace,” he said.
Talbot said the ordinance has
given people something new to
complain about.
“Instead of complaining about
the food, the service or the tem
perature. they can complain
about the smoke,” he said.
Some of his employees are
complaining, too, he said.
“By dividing up the restaurant
into smoking and non-smoking
areas,” he said, “the waitpersons
who have the smoking area might
wait a long time before anyone
gets seated at one of their tables.”
Talbot said to solve the prob
lem, each waiter is responsible for
a few tables in the smoking area
and a few in their regular section.
Customers also complain about
the location of the smoking areas,
Talbot said.
“Our garden area is now for
smokers only because it is sec
tioned off from the rest of the
restaurant.” he said. “The smok-

ers feel that they are second-class
citizens because they are being
pushed to the back of the restau
rant. and non-smokers want to sit
where the smokers are sitting."
John Houseal. manager of
Captains Half Shell Oyster Bar
on 206 E. Villa Maria Road, also
expressed reservations about the
ordinance.
“I haven’t had any problems
yet,” Houseal said, “but what wor
ries me is how the ordinance is
going to be enforced.”
Bryan City Councilwoman He
len Chavarria said. “As long as
the businesses post signs and are
in compliance with the ordinance,
the managers of the restaurants
should not feel responsible for
anything else."
Councilman Randy Sims,
owner of Randy Sims Bar-B-Cue,
3824 Texas Ave., said the ordi
nance can’t lx? enforced. He said
he is not going to look for viola
tors unless there is a complaint
Sims said in the last 23 years he
has had three people ask fora
non-smoking section at his res
taurant.
But other managers said thev
agree with the ordinance.
John Beltrand, owner ofTom’s
Barbecue, 4613 Texas Ave., said
something had to be done sooner
or later and the ordinance is a
good move for non-smokers.
Tracey McCoy, manager of
Steak & Ale Restaurant, 1710
Briarcrest Dr., said now it’s the
non-smokers' turn to speak up.
She added that Steak 4L- Ale al
ways has had smoking and non
smoking areas, so the ordinance
will not affect them.
Sims said some advocates of
the ordinance Itelieve that more
non-smokers will go to a restau
rant ii they know it has desig
nated smoking and non-smoking
areas.
I louseal said that with the early
closing bout s and now the smok
ing ordinance, the Bryan restau
rants are unable to compete with
(College Station restaurants.
“College Station gets most of
the business in this area,” he said.
