threw three touchdown passes, Ger
ald Willhite scored three times and
Karl Mecklenburg and Rulon Jones
led a dominating defense as un
beaten Denver erupted for 22 sec
ond-quarter points and shut down
undermanned Dallas 29-14 Sunday.
Two of Willhite’s touchdowns
came on nine- and 15-yard passes
from Elway and the third was a one-
yard leap set up by a 50-yard com
pletion from Elway to rookie Mark
Jackson.
Elway, who was 12 of 24 for 200
yards, also had a 12-yard scoring
pass to Gene Lang for the final score
in the fourth period as Denver ran
its record to 5-0 and remained one
of the NFL’s three unbeaten teams.
But it was the Denver defense,
which held Herschel Walker to 33
yards in 15 carries, that was largely
responsible for the victory over the
Cowboys, who had tied an NFL re
cord with 30 or more points in their
first four games. Dallas, which fell to
3-2, was playing without quarterback
Danny White and running back
Tony Dorsett and lost star defensive
tackle Randy White in the first quar
ter with a pulled hamstring.
The game, played before a Mile
High Stadium record crowd of
76,082, was decided in a span of
3:23 in the second period in which
Denver turned a listless, scoreless tie
into a 16-0 lead.
Lions pummel Oilers
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — James
Jones ran, for 76 yards and two
touchdowns Sunday as the Detroit
Lions beat Houston 24-13 despite an
NFL career-high 398 yards passing
by Oilers’ quarterback Warren
Moon.
Moon connected on 21 of 38 pass
attempts, including five for 155
yards to wide receiver Ernest Givins
and an 81-yard TD bomb to Drew
Hill. But he was intercepted three
times.
The Lions, 2-3, snapped a three-
game losing streak while the Oilers,
1-4, lost their fourth straight.
Jones, who carried the ball 22
times, scored on a pair of 1-yard
dives and Eric Hippie teamed with
Herman Hunter for an 18-yard
scoring pass play — all in the second
quarter.
The Oilers sandwiched field goals
of 25 and 19 yards by Tony Zendejas
around Moon’s bomb to Hill as the
Lions led 21-13 at halftime.
A 48-yard field goal by Detroit’s
Eddie Murray in the fourth quarter
was the only scoring in the second
half.
Hippie, who was held to minus-5
yards passing in the first quarter by
Houston’s AFC-leading defense, fin
ished with 7 of 14 for 93 yards for
the Lions.
The game drew 41,960 in the Sil-
verdome. There were 7,275 no-
shows.

Astros clobber Braves, 4-1
HOUSTON (AP) — Five Houston
pitchers combined on a four-hitter
and Jose Cruz hit a two-run double
Sunday, leading the Astros to a 4-1
victory over the Atlanta Braves.
The triumph was the Astros’ fifth
straight and improved their record
to 96-56, best in their history.
Bob Knepper, 17-12, pitched five
perfect innings and combined with
Danny Darwin, Jeff Calhoun, Char
lie Kerfeld and Dave Smith for the
victory. Knepper won for only the
second time since August 15 and
equalled the Houston record for
most wins by a left-hander set in
1973 by Dave Roberts.
Atlanta’s first hit came off Darwin
with one out in the sixth when Glenn
Hubbard singled to center. Knepper
was lifted then to prepare for the
playoffs, which begin in Houston on
Wednesday.
Smith allowed three hits, includ
ing Andres Thomas’ RBI single, in
the ninth inning.
The Astros opened a 3-0 lead in
the second inning as Braves loser
Rick Mahler, 14-18, surrendered
three straight hits. Glenn Davis led
off with a single to left and Kevin
Bass followed with a single to right.
Cruz’ double to the right gave
Houston a 2-0 lead. Cruz went to
third on a fly out and came on Craig
Reynolds’ single to right.
In the third inning, Bass, who
went 3-for-3, drove in Davis with a
two-out single to right.
Rangers down Angels, 7-4
ARLINGTON (AP) — Pete Inca-
viglia hit a two-run homer and Odd-
ibe McDowell had a two-run double
Sunday as the Texas Rangers de
feated the California Angels 7-4.
Charlie Hough, 17-10, pitched a
five-hitter and won his fifth straight
decision. California rookie Wally
oyner hit a two-run single, giving
im 100 RBI this season.
The Angels won only two of their
final nine games after clinching the
American League West title. Don
Sutton, 15-11, took the season-end
ing loss. He gave up nine hits and six
earned runs in 5Vs innings.

Incaviglia hit his 30th homer of
the season in the first inning after a
double by Scott Fletcher.
Joyner’s single tied it in the
fourth. The-Rangers went ahead 3-2
in the fifth on an RBI single by Pete
O’Brien.
Texas added three runs in the
sixth on Don Slaught’s RBI single
and a two-run double by McDowell.
Doug DeCinces hit a two-run homer,
his 26th, in the Angels seventh.
Slaught had another RBI single in
the seventh.
