Senior legislature asks for programs to be left intact AUSTIN (AP) — The Silver- Haired Legislature wrapped up four days of deliberations Thursday by urging state lawmakers not to cut spending on programs for the el derly. The top priority set by the 116- member senior legislature also in cluded a call for support for commu nity-based services and alternatives for institutional care. “We have come out with some outstanding resolutions across the board, and I believe they will be worth fighting for in the Legislature and back in our communities,” said Raleigh Jackson of LaGrange, pre siding officer of the Silver-Haired Legislature. The spending resolution also said reasonable consideration should be given to increasing funds for pro grams for the elderly. “I think they look at this as kind of a demand to the Legislature to main tain funding with the hopes of im proving funding in certain areas,” Jackson said. The recommendations approved Thursday will be sent to the 70th Legislature when it convenes in Jan uary. In addition to the combination top priority, the Silver-Haired Legis lature approved the following prior ity issues: • Increasing the allowable in come for Medicaid recipients from the current $670 per month to $1,008 per month. • Establishing a state-adminis tered health insurance plan to cover catastrophic illness. • Freezing property tax pay ments at age 65. School districts cur rently have such a freeze. • Improving retirement benefits for teachers and state workers. • Barring the taking of homes to pay off debts. While calling for increased spend ing for some programs, delegates voted down a proposal to upgrade nursing home requirements. The defeated nursing home reso lution called for private rooms and increased minimum space require ments and delegates said it would unnecessarily increase the cost of nursing home care. cut here 1 Defensive Driving Course Oct. 7, 8 and Oct. 20, 21 College Station Hilton Pre-register by phone: 693-8178 Ticket deferral and 10% insurance discount cut herei FREE DELIVERY Pick-up 1 lb.
