Late-inning homer
lifts Astros to win
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Hous
ton Astros right-hander Mike Scott
said he wasn’t disappointed when his
16-inning, no-hit streak concluded
Thursday against the San Francisco
Giants.
“It could have been worse — we
could have lost,” Scott said after the
Astros posted a 2-1 victory on Bill
Doran’s leadoff homer in the 10th
inning.
Scott, who fired a no-hitter
against the Giants in Houston on
Sept. 25 as the Astros clinched the
NL West title, didn’t allow a hit in
the rematch until Will Clark led off
the seventh inning with a double.
Clark later scored on Candy Maldo
nado’s double, giving the Giants a 1-
0 lead.
“I had pretty good stuff, but I
didn’t take it too seriously,” Scott
said. “I was just trying to get my
work in with the playoffs coming up
and all.”
Scott’s work included eight strike
outs for a season total of 306, mak
ing him only the fourth National
League pitcher ever to surpass 300
strikeouts in a season. The last one
to do it was J.R. Richard of the As
tros, who struck out 313 batters in
1979.
The Astros entered the ninth tra
iling 1-0 on two hits, but rallied to tie
the game. Doran then connected for
sixth homer off reliever Jeff Robin
son, 6-3.
Matt Keough, 5-4, who worked
out of the ninth inning jam was the
winner and Dave Smith worked the
10th inning for his 33rd save of the
season.
The Astros tied the game in the
top of the ninth on a two-out wild
pitch by reliever Scott Garrelts. Ke
vin Bass opened the inning with a
walk and advanced to second on
pinch-hitter Denny Walling’s single
to right Field.
With the count 1-2 on Hatcher,
Garrelts’s inside pitch sailed beyond
the plate, enabling Bass to score the
tying run.
Clark’s double ended Scott’s hit
less string at 16 innings and Maldo
nado’s one-out double ended the
right-hander’s scoreless streak at 20
innings.
Clark, a rookie First baseman,
lined a 1-0 pitch into the right field
corner for his 27th double of the
Fletcher leads Texas
to victory over Angels
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) —
Scott Fletcher, atoning for a key er
ror in the top of the inning, got his
Fifth hit of the game with two outs in
the bottom of the ninth, an RBI sin
gle that capped a two-run rally and
gave the Texas Rangers a 10-9 vic
tory over the California Angels.
The Angels had gone ahead 9-8
when Devon White reached on
Fletcher’s throwing error from
shortstop, stole second and scored
on Rick Burleson’s single.
But Larry Parrish doubled off
California reliever Urbano Lugo to
start the bottom of the ninth and
Don Slaught sacrificed pinch-runner
Curtis Wilkerson to third. Gary Lu
cas, 4-1, then gave up a game-tying
single to Tom Paciorek.
After Jerry Browne flied out,
Oddibe McDowell singled pinch-
runner Jeff Kunkel to second and
Fletcher followed with a bloop dou
ble to left for Texas’ 21st hit of the
game. Fletcher went 5-for-6 for the
first Five-hit game of his career.
Greg Harris, 10-8, gained the vic
tory by getting the Final out in the
California ninth.
