A&M Coach Steve Silvey says he
has been disappointed in the perfor
mance of the men’s team, although
idded he expects them to improve
time for the Southwest Confer-
mce meet.
Although the women’s team has
been beset with injuries, Silvey says
the team is finally coming together
and will be ready for the meet.

Mavericks come to terms
with first-round pickTorpley
DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mav
ericks Thursday agreed to terms on
a five-year contract with first-round
draft choice Roy Tarpley of Michi
gan, the NBA team announced.
Tarpley, a 6-foot-ll, 230-pound
forward, was the seventh player
taken in the June 17 draft. He is ex
pected to be ready for full squad
workouts Friday after arriving from
Detroit Thursday night, signing the
contract and taking a physical, the
Mavericks said.
“We’re pleased that Roy will be
with us at our first veteran camp
workouts,” said general manager
Norm Sonju. “That was our goal all
along.”
Terms of the contract were not
disclosed.
But Sonju said it is a five-year
agreement with deferred compensa
tion as part of the package. Incen
tives protested by Tarpley’s agents
were eliminated, he said.
Tarpley, a New York City native
who attended Cooley High School in
Detroit, led Michigan to a 54-9 re
cord the past two years and back-to-
back Big Ten titles. As a junior, he
was the Big Ten player of the year
with an average 19 points per game
and a Big Ten-leading 10.4 re
bounds per game.
Rogers tries to leave Riggins’ shadow
WASHINGTON (AP) — All
George Rogers wanted was to get the
opportunity to be the No. 1 running
back on an NFL contender. Now
he’s gotten the chance, the for
mer Heisman Trophy winner rap-
y is making Washington Redskins
fans forget about John Riggins.
Rogers, who leads the league in
touchdowns with six and has rushed
for386 yards, a pace that would put
him over 1,500 yards this, season,
gets the chance to impress his for
mer team Sunday when the
Redskins meet the Saints at New Or
leans. That’s another thing he’s
wanted to do for a long time.
“When 1 was down there, I used
to kid our defense that I’d love to
run against them," Rogers said. “I’m
“Contributing to a winning football team, that’s all I
ever wanted to do since I got out of college. It sure is a
better atmosphere here than it was in New Orleans. ”
— George Rogers,
Redskins running back
pretty sure they want to stuff me
pretty good.”
Not many teams have contained
Rogers this year. The six-year NFL
veteran has been a major factor in
helping the 4-0 Redskins to their
best start since 1982, when they won
the Super Bowl. Riggins, long a folk-
hero in Washington, no longer is a
topic of conversation, after being re
leased during the offseason.
“Contributing to a winning foot
ball team, that’s all I ever wanted to
do since I got out of college,” Rogers
said. “It sure is a better atmosphere
here than it was in New Orleans.”
Rogers, drafted No. 1 by the
Saints out of South Carolina, gained
4,267 yards in four years at New Or
leans, but the team never had better
than a .500 record. Rogers, still the
Saints’ all-time leader in carries and

yards, came to Washington before
the 1985 season in exchange for a
No. 1 draft choice.
Rogers went into training camp
this year confident that he would be
the main man in Washington’s one-
back offense. But the Redskins
signed USFL star Kelvin Bryant in
August, setting the stage for what
appeared to be a bitter rivalry.
The expected unrest never
materialized, partly because Rogers
accepted his role as a power runner,
leaving the pass catching to Bryant,
and partly because Bryant was
placed on the injured reserve list af
ter injuring ligaments in his knee
during the second game of the sea
son. The two have gotten along so
well that they now live three houses
apart.
