Winnebagos. Midnight Yell Practice. An Aggie softball tournament. An Aggie softball tournament on a football weekend? Texas A&M softball Coach Bob Brock is hoping all of the hullabaloo that accompanies an Aggie football weekend will spread to the Intramu ral Complex on campus and the South wood Valley Athletic Complex this weekend for the Aggie Invitatio nal. “A lot of people have heard about A&M,” Brock said. “I think they’re going to want to come over and see us.” The Aggies will host a seven-team tournament that features Baylor, Louisiana Tech, Sam Houston State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, Southwest Texas State University and Ranger Junior Col- lege. A&M is expecting its toughest competition to come from Louisiana Tech — a traditional softball power. “We’re just real excited about the chance to play Louisiana Tech,” Brock said. Brock also is excited about the pitching of sophomore Julie Car penter, who will be throwing a new, as-yet-undisclosed pitch against Tech in the opener of the tourney. “If she’ll throw like she’s been throwing in practice, Tech will have a tough time,” he said. T he action begins today at the In tramural Complex when A&M will play some preliminary games against Tech and Ranger. The Aggies' first game will be with Ranger at 5:30 p.m., and the second contest will fea ture the two heavyweights of the tourney in A&M and Tech at 7 p.m. Saturday’s and Sunday’s action will be at the Southwood Valley Ath letic Complex in College Station. Admission to all tournament games will be free of charge. But the passing statistics are mak ing Texas Tech sad. Quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver only has completed a paltry 42 percent of his passes and Baylor intercepted him three times in the Bears’ 45-14 rout. Defensively, passing attacks have been the Red Raiders downfall. Texas Tech was No. 2 in the country last year in pass defense (allowing 1,204 yards), but already has given up 1,156 in its first four games. Perhaps A&M can take advantage of Texas Tech’s defensive lapses and get the Aggie offense on track. A&M’s been wishy-washy on of fense so far. The Aggies seem to have little trouble moving the ball upfield — until they get to the oppo nent’s 30-yard line. Once there, the team sputters and stops short of the endzone too many times. The road to the Cotton Bowl starts Saturday for A&M and Texas Tech is just the first pothole of many awaiting the Aggies.
