WASHINGTON (AP) —
Senate voted Tuesday 97-2 to ap
prove a bill to combat illegal drugs.
The Senate bill and a House-
passed measure of Sept. 11 reflect
Congress’ response to increasing
voter concern about drugs.
The Congressional Budget Office
said the House bill authorizes $6.1
billion through the 1991 fiscal year.
The Senate bill authorizes $3.2 bil
lion.
The Senate measure would give
the secretary of defense three
months to prepare a list of actions
the U.S. military could take to in
crease anti-drug efforts by civilian
agencies.
The House measure would give
the president 30 days to deploy mili
tary equipment and personnel to
halt smugglers at the borders and ar
rest them when in hot pursuit.
The House bill would allow capi
tal punishment for people who in
tentionally caused the death of an
other person.
The House bill would allow ad
mission of evidence found in war
rantless searches provided federal
officers acted in good faith.
