NCAA begins inquiry
of Texas Tech program
LUBBOCK (AP) — Texas Tech
University has been advised by the
NCAA that an official inquiry is un
der way into alleged recruiting viola
tions between 1982 and 1984, the
school announced Monday.
7
respond to the allegations, according
to a statement issued by the school.
School officials refused to say
Monday what sport the inquiry in
volves, but said the allegations do
not involve members of the current
coaching staff or academic irregula
rities.
Texas Tech has been asked to
make its own inquiry into the allega
tions and then appear before the
NCAA Committee on Infractions,
the school said.
Tech President Lauro F. Cavazos
said the university wants “to bring an
early and conclusive end to the in
quiry in the interests of all con
cerned.”
“You may be assured of our coop
eration and intent to correct any
shortcomings, if they exist, in our
athletic program,” Cavazos said in a
letter to David Berst, NCAA director
of enforcement.

NL West to nine games over San
Francisco with 12 games left in the
regular season. The magic number
is four, meaning any combination of
Houston victories and San Francisco
defeats totaling four would give the
Astros the title.
Danny Darwin, 3-2, was the loser,
going 3% innings and giving up six
runs, only one of which was earned,
on eight hits.
