Orders to go Northgate 846-7275 (next to Campus Theater) ew signs remind students f motor vehicle regulation By Julie Vass Reporter Die, X • “No mopeds, scooters and motor- des.” Many motor vehicle operators Have encountered this new sign on klewalks, and although the signs are not antique, the regulation is. ■ Texas A&M Motor Vehicle Regu- laiions, section 5, paragraph D, Beads: “A motor vehicle shall not be operated on any sidewalk, mail or lawn.” ■ A motor vehicle definitely in cludes mopeds, scooters and motor cycles — despite what people may ish to think, said Bob Wiatt, A&M’s irector of'security and traffic. Eugene H. Ray, director of rounds maintenance, said, “People ave to realize that mopeds are like :ars — people need to park them and start walking.” Sandra Lancharic, a junior at A&M and a moped owner, said, “I don’t think that mopeds and motor cycles drive on the sidewalk unless that’s the only way for them to get to the parking places.” Wiatt said the 40 signs around the core of the campus, which were set up in early August, are not only to remind moped and motorcycle rid ers of the regulation, but also to serve as a form of peer pressure. “When people go snooting across on their motorized steeds they are getting a lot of fellow students hol lering at them,” he said. After complaints from students who had been “scared out of their britches,” Wiatt said he decided the signs were a necessity. To increase public awareness of the regulation before resorting to the signs, Wiatt and others sent a let ter to faculty, students and adminis trators last spring. The letter contained a warning that said the owner of the vehicle faces a potential lawsuit if someone is injured as a result of an accident. Wiatt said that although most of the accidents involving mopeds are minor, it is the fear of what could have happened that is the biggest concern of the people who complain to him. Ray said, “Safety is primary. The greater the population, the greater the need for rigid controls.” Those who don’t follow the regu lations, Wiatt said, can get a ticket filed in the justice of the peace court for up to $200. Wiatt said he realizes moped parking needs to be increased, but this year’s budget may stand in the wav. rERNrn elation- on of Lib^ potent o ■alfr 1 ' 4 Secret f, TechT rkins, rchaflt; tin; LionMayot CaB If you're considering retirement.
