Arkansas noseguard Tony Che rico won the AP’s Defensive Player of the Week award for his nine tackles in the Razorbacks’ 21-0 shut out of Mississippi. Jeffery, who didn’t touch the ball until the second quarter, rushed for 343 yards, beating by a yard the old SWC single game rushing mark es tablished by Texas’ Roosevelt Leaks in 1974. He was just 14 yards short of the NCAA record single-game rushing record set in 1984 by Washington State’s Rueben Mayes. The feat which included five touchdown runs in TCU’s 48-31 vic tory over Tulane earned him The Associated Press’ SWC Offensive Player of the Week award. Jeffery, ajunior from Gladewater, scored on touchdown runs of 11, 38, 32, 81, and 67 yards to set another school record. Notre Dame 0-1-0 143 Williams takes round 1 of Aggie- Tiger series By Tim Stanfield Sports Writer Former Hempstead running back Harvey Williams may have an out standing college career at LSU, but he will never forget his initial contest for the Tigers. c**r*r** On Saturday, SpOTTS in a script no Viewpoint Hollywood pro ducer would touch, Williams played a pivotal role in the Tigers’ 35-17 win over the team he jilted last spring, the Texas A&M Aggies. In fact, he scored the winning touch down. After A&M had taken a 14-7 lead on the first play of the second quar ter, Williams was inserted into the lineup by Tiger Head Coach Bill Arnsparger on the Tigers’ next pos session. Ironically, Williams’ initial carry ended after a 3-yard gain when he was tackled by a former Hempstead teammate — linebacker Johnny Hol land. Later in the same quarter Wil liams showed his speed and quick ness, breaking loose for a 12-yard run. But it was in the pivotal third pe riod that Williams showed the 79,713 in attendance and the na tional ESPN audience why both teams wanted him. The final half started badly for him when Aggie linebacker Larry Kelm shook Williams loose from the ball after he had gained eight yards. A&M later took a 17-14 lead, but on the ensuing LSU drive, it was show time for Williams. After two 4-yard carries, he made a tremendous over-the-shoulder catch of quarterback Tom Hodson’s pass for a 30-yard gain to the Aggie 8-yard line. On a second-;md-goal from the 2, Williams hit the center of the A&M line, but was stopped at the 1 by Alex Morris and Tim Landrum. He was hit hard on the following play, but kept his balance and went into the end zone for the touchdown that put LSU ahead to stay. The victory always will be a high light for Williams and a bitter pill for the Aggies. However, the teams play each other the next three years. Maybe the Aggies can give him a rude homecoming when the Tigers come to College Station to open the 1987 season. AMERICAN LEAGUE NATIONAL LEAGUE East Division East Division W L Pet. GB W L Pet.
