HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — More
than 100,000 black children younger
than 18 are waiting to be adopted.
Each year, thousands of couples
place their names on seemingly end
less waiting lists, hoping for a
healthy white baby. They know they
will wait years.
Yet many healthy black babies are
available for adoption, although the
odds are good they will wait years
for a family — if they ever find one.
By the time they reach 2, children
who have not been adopted are put
into a hard-to-place category, mean
ing their age has made the odds
against them finding a suitable fam
ily greater.
Black babies are put into the cat
egory as newborns, according to
Wahnetta Williams of Tressler Lu
theran Services.
While black children can be
placed with white families, Williams,
who is a black adoptive parent, sees
some real advantages to placing
them in black homes.
The child will grow up knowing
about his culture and developing an
ethnic identity, site said. He or she
will be exposed to certain foods and
customs otherwise lacking.
Williams is in charge of recruit
ment for Tressler’s program, which
tries to find black families willing to
adopt a black child.
“We’re just not getting die fami
lies,” she said. “Black people are not
aware of adoption.”
They have misconceptions about
the adoption process; they think it is
an expensive undertaking, she said.
The entire adoption process costs
about S900 through Tressler, Wil
liams said, and many times, the total
is less because various agencies con
tribute. Private adoptions can cost
up to several thousand dollars.
Adoptive parents are required to
take part in a nine-week training ses
sion.
According to Williams, the ses
sions are not about parenting, but
about adoption and the needs of the
adopted child.
“Really what it’s all about is can
you love a child, not can you pay the
bill,” Williams said.
She and her husband, Gerald,
know.
In 1983, after rearing three chil
dren, they adopted their first child,
Matthew, then 3.
Since then, they have adopted six
more black children, most recently
an infant.
Three years ago Tressler started a
local “One Church, One Child” pro
gram.
