Authorities seek diary of officer SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Investi gators in the shooting death of San Antonio policeman Stephen Smith were looking for a vigilante diary they think Smith may have used to record acts of vandalism and possi bly assassination. The San Antonio Light reported Thursday that the book may have been lost because the police depart ment “failed to secure Smith’s apart ment after his death, and the offi cer’s belongings were removed.” Smith, a seven-year veteran of the police force, was shot by fellow offi cer Farrell Tucker on Aug. 18. Since then, authorities have said they are investigating whether other individuals might be involved in Smith’s alleged vigilante activities. The Bexar County grand jury in vestigation of the shooting case offi cially began Wednesday when Spe cial Prosecutor Sid Harle obtained several subpoenaes, including those for Smith’s widow and his younger brother. The search for the diary began af ter investigators discovered that Smith used to brag to fellow officers and others about his actions. “Smith unquestionably had a ‘Dirty Harry’ complex and liked to brag about the things he did,” the Light reported, quoting an un named source.
