Libertarians present
plan for budget crisis
AUSTIN (AP) — Statewide candi
dates of the Libertarian Party, who
will be on the Nov. 4 general election
ballot, say they have solutions to the
state’s financial problems.
Therese S. Doyle, San Antonio,
candidate for governor, told a news
conference Wednsday, said, “The
key words are deregulate and pi iva-
tize.”
She suggested doing away with
the agriculture department, the
Railroad Commission, and the
Texas Forest Service.
“Virtually every agency in the
area of natural resources is an
agency that should be left to the pri
vate sector if there is a demand for
its services," Doyle, a school teacher,
said.
She also suggested state highways
might be turned into toll roads.
George Meeks, San Antonio, can
didate for comptroller, proposed a
10 percent cut of all state govern
ment budgets, plus a 50 percent
slash in the salary of Comptroller
Bob Bullock.
Punishment phase begins
in San Antonio man's trial
VICTORIA (AP) — Testimony
began Wednesday in the punish
ment phase in the trial of a San An
tonio man convicted of killing a
banker’s wife during a botched ex
tortion attempt.
Jurors deliberated about four
hours Tuesday morning before con
victing Lesley Lee Gosch, 31, of capi
tal murder in the death of Rebecca
Jo Patton, of San Antonio.
Gosch, who showed no emotion
when the verdict was read, faces life
in prison or death by injection for
the crime.
Patton was shot seven times in the
head during a September 1985 ex
tortion attempt by Gosch and al
leged accomplice John Laurence
Rogers in Castle Hills in San Anto
nio, testimony showed.
During the punishment phase
Wednesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney
Ray Jahn testified that Gosch
pleaded guilty Aug. 19, 1985 to
manufacture and sale of a silencer.
He was supposed to be sentenced
Sept. 20, hut failed to appear.
