wasn’t at his faultless best, Greg Lou
ganis had more than enough Thurs
day to earn three perfect 10s on his
way to victory in the 3-meter plat
form diving competition at the U.S.
Olympic Festival.
And in women’s basketball, Ten
nessee sophomore Bridgette Gor
don scored 22 points as the South
downed the North 83-78 for its fifth
consecutive gold medal. A&M soph
omore Donna Roper added six
points for the South, which com
piled a 4-0 record.

at the 1984 Olympics and McCor

Pavlas, only the second quar
terback in All-Star history to surpass
200 yards passing, set up the score
with a 37-yard pass to future A&M

Louganis, 26, of Boca Raton, Fla.,
now has nine Festival gold medals.

Thursday as junior action began in
the Texas A&M “Kaepa” Tennis
Tournament.
The tournament runs through
Aug. 3 and play in the adult divi
sions begins today at 1 p.m.
Seven Aggies are playing in the
tourney. In the men’s championship
division, Kimmo Alkio, this year’s

champion, is the No. 1 seed. Sopho-

A&M team, is seeded fourth.
In the women’s championship di
vision, the top four seeds are mem
bers of A&M’s SWC championship
squad this year. Heading the seeding
is senior Vanne Akagi at No. 1. She
is followed by Kim Labuschagne,
Gaye Lynne Gensler and Karen
Marshall.
The touchdown nullified a record
81-yard punt return for a touch
down by the North’s Johnny Hurn-
don of Daingerlleld that gave the
North a 13-10 lead with 1:52 to play
in the third quarter.
Hurndon’s return broke the pre
vious record return of 68 yards by
Galena Park’s Michael Frazier in
1971.
A&M student Melissa Dowling is
the No. 1 seed in the regular wom
en’s singles.
Pavlas completed 16 of 32 passes
for 246 yards to break the previous
record of 224 yards set by Robert
Armstrong of Houston Sam Hous
ton in 1971.
Waddle caught seven passes for
173 yards, also an All-Star record,
breaking the only mark of 166 yards
receiving by Bryan Willingham of
Pasadena in 1971.
