I homas said the signee's worries
ultimately center around a fear that
the research cannot he judged or
evaluated bv other scientists. He
tailed those fears "hogwash” and
noted that other types of private re
search has restrictions also.
Dr. John kogut, professor of
physics at Illinois University, co
drafted the original petition that has
been circulating at other universities
around the country.
So far. he says 3,7(H) full-time fac
ulty and about 2.800 graduate stu
dents have signed the petition. Fif
teen Nobel laureates have also
added their names.
A status report on the national pe
tition states tnat in each of the 109
physical science and engineering re
search departments in the country.
50 percent or more of the faculty
have pledged not to participate.
Fifty-seven percent of the com
bined faculties of the top 20 physics
'departments in the United States
hav«. signed, as ranked by the
'Chronicle of Higher Education.
Dr. Sanford Gottlieb, executive
director of United Campuses to Pre
vent Nuclear War, said this is the
first time the scientific community
has refused on a nation-wide scale to
do research on a major weapons sys
tem.
“This is unprecedented," Gottlieb
said. “It's a successful effort to say to
Congress that there is an important,
informed constituenev out there that
is not going to go play along with
Star Wars."
But SDI officials seem undaunted
bv the petition. They repon that
they have received more requests for
funds than they can approve.
