In announcing the gift, Dedman, founder and chairman of the hoard of Club Corporation of America, made a pitch for other wealthy Tex ans to “enjoy the thrill of giving while living.” The Dedman’s gift of $1 million a year for 10 years, starting in 1986, is the largest scholarship gift ever re ceived by UT-Austin and is the larg est single donation to UT’s College of Liberal Arts. In 1981, Dedman and his wife Nancy, gave $25 million to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, say ing then that private institutions needed the money more than tax- supported schools. Dedman, who has three degrees Irom U1 and a master’s of law de gree from SMU, told UT officials and supporters Thursday, “I’ve said many times that 1 think SMU is the best asset Dallas has. 1 think the Uni versity of 1 exas is (he best asset the state of Texas lias." 1 he $10 million pledge will al most double LI I-Austin's endow ment for student scholarships, which is now nearly $13.9 million, and would allow certain students — se lected by a committee — to receive a minimum of $24,000forfoi Other “Dedman scholars!; receive scholarships rangin; minimums of S750 to $2,OflOi “I’m visiting with youjiM bit here to get some of thee ger fortunes in the state i start turning loose of a biiij said Dedman, who Forbest savs has assets of at least! lion. “One obviously other big 1 to give is the simple realiz; they don’t put any luggagerJ hearses — you can’t take it v so you probably ought to sunt something about thinkingabc ing it away,” he said. Science teacher Deron Bissett, who was named the outstanding high school science teacher in 1982 by the Science Teachers of Texas, has been reassigned to the school district’s learning resource center.
