The Canadiens, coming off a dif
ficult seven-game Adams Division fi
nal with Hartford, showed they
could shut down the Rangers, who
managed 27 shots but few from close
range.
When the Rangers did get near
the net, Roy stopped them.
The rookie was especially strong
in the final minute, robbing Willie
Huber and Brian MacLellan as New
York pressed for the tying goal.
Game 2 of the best-of-seven NHL
series will be here Saturday night.

at one game apiece.
Milwaukee outscored Philadel
phia 30-21 in the third period to
take a 91-76 edge into the fourth pe
riod. Milwaukee led by as many 17
points in the third quarter.
The 76ers closed the gap to 106-
97 with 3:45 left after a technical
foul shot by Maurice Cheeks, but a
strong Bucks defense and accurate
free-throw shooting sealed the vic
tory.
The Bucks jumped to an early 12-
3 lead, led 30-23 at the end of the
first period and 61-55 at halftime.
Pierce scored six points during a
13-3 spurt that stretched a 78-71
Milwaukee lead with 4:11 remaining
to 91-74 with 34 seconds left in the
third period.
Sidney Moncrief, Milwaukee’s all-
star guard, returned to the lineup
after missing Game 1 with an in
jured left heel and scored 16 points.
Charles Barkley finished with 26
points, Julius Erving had 24 and
Cheeks added 23 points for Phila
delphia.

In other semifinal conference
play, Houston is on top of the Nug
gets 2-0 heading into another Friday
night matchup in Denver.
Despite having to go through the
long playoff procedure, both the
Celtics and Los Angeles seem to be
enjoying the workout.
“I’m sure that I’ll get a very warm
welcome (in Atlanta),” quipped
Danny Ainge, who was ejected from
Tuesday night’s game in Boston for
scuffling with Hawks forward Scott
Hastings. “I’m looking forward to
the crowd reception. It’ll get me
fired up, and I’ll want to play even
more.”
“I like it this way. I like it intense,”
said Lakers Coach Pat Riley follow
ing his club’s 117-113 victory over
the Mavericks Wednesday night.
“I think having a close game like
this will help us,” added Lakers for
ward Earvin “Magic” Johnsoh.
Neither Boston nor the Lakers
has lost in the playoffs.
