Aggies take
4th at SWC
tournament
From Staff and Wire Reports
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Much
like the Texas A&M women’s golf
team earlier this week, the Aggie
men’s golf team finished its
Southwest Conference season
with a fourth-place f inish at the
conference tourney held this
weekend at the Pleasant Valley
Country Club.
Jim Sorenson, a senior transfer
for TCU, shot a course-record 67
Sunday to —
win the the
indi vid ual
Men’s Golf
competition
Christian to
and lead Texas
its first ever SWC
golf title. The Horned Frogs shot
a three day total of 876, eight
strokes better than Houston and
Arkanasas and 14 shots ahead of
A&M.
The Aggies were led by senior
Jorge Coghlan, who f inished sev
enth individually at 219, and Jeff
Maggert, who finished eighth at
220.
After Friday’s opening round,
A&M was tied for second with
TCU and trailed defending
champion Houston by five
strokes.
Saturday, however, was not as
kind to the Aggies, who had fin
ished no better than seventh
place in their last three tourna
ments. A&M tumbled to fourth
place, while TCU made up three
strokes on Houston and Arkansas
to slip into third.
Sunday, it was all I'CU. Soren
son made a crucial pat on the
ninth hole, then started the back
nine with four straight birdies.
His 213 total for 54 holes was 3-
under-par and good enough for a
three-shot victory over teammate
Pete Jordan and UH’s Steve Jack-
son.
‘‘It seemed like we had
knocked and knocked on the
door all year long,” Sorenson
said. “We finally knocked it
down. It was much more fulfil
ling to win the team than the indi
vidual championship."
UT replaces A&M at top of S WC

AUSTIN — Anyone who has ever
dropped jewelry down the drain and
have it vanish forever, knows how
No. 9 Texas A&M feels now after it
saw its chances of winning the
Southwest Conference baseball title
washed away by No. 5 Texas over
the weekend.
UT came into the three-game se
ries one game ■ -
off the pace in BdSGbClII
the SWC, but ■■■■■■■■HHaaaMi
after this weekend’s 3-1, 5-4 and 16-
1 1 sweep of A&M at Disch-Falk
Field, the Longhorns can breeze to
their 57th SWC title in 70 years.
Texas, now 48-9 overall and 15-3
in the SWC, needs any combination
of A&M losses or Longhorn wins
equalling “2” to clinch the confer
ence crown.
Meanwhile, A&M, which fell to
36-21 and 13-5, can finish in second
or third in the SWC, depending on
the outcome of its next conference
series this weekend against TCU.
A&M Coach Mark Johnson said
the losses to UT were especially
tough because the Aggies had their
chances to win the final two games.
“(Texas) hit the ball well in the
clutch,” Johnson said. “They came
through when they had to come
through. You have to give them
credit. They didn’t quit. They kept
coming back. We f inally just ran out
of gas.
“It’s always tough to lose close
ones. If you get blown out, you can
kind of get use to it before the
game’s over. We didn’t get a chance
to do that.”
A&M didn’t get a chance to* do
much hitting either Friday night as
Texas ace Greg Swindell man
handled the Aggies by pitching a
four-hitter and striking out 11 in the
'Horns’ 3-1 win.
With Texas’jewel out of the way 4
Saturday, A&M appeared ready to
move back into first place.
The Aggies got two quick runs for
A&M starter Darryl Fry, who was in
and out of trouble throughout the
game.
But with A&M holding a precious
4-3 lead. Fry couldn’t hold off the
Texas charge as freshman Brian

of Saturday’s double-header. However, it wasn’t
enough as the Ags were swept 3-1, 5-4 and 16-11.
Johnson belled a game-tying home
run to lead off the seventh.
Pat Wernig entered and immedi
ately got himself into trouble, load
ing the bases on a single and two
walks.
UT’s Todd Haney, brother of for
mer A&M outfielder Buddy Haney,
missed a suicide squeeze bunt for the
second out.
But with a 3-2 count on him, Ha
ney sliced a liner to left, which just
nicked the glove of a diving Jeff
Schow. The ball fell in, giving Texas
the 5-4 win.
If the first two games were wild,
the finale was absolute bedlum — 27
runs, 26 hits, seven errors, three
wild pitches, three hit batters and a
balk.
The Aggies appeared to be in
good shape, scoring six runs in the
third inning and five in the fourth to
take a comfortable 1 1-4 lead.
But Jay Searcy put the ’Horns
back into the contest with a three-
run blast off Wernig in the fourth.
Texas got another run back in the
fifth, and a two in (he sixth to pull
within 1 1-10.
The eighth was a disaster for the
Ags, as they gave up six Texas runs.
Haney, who wasn’t offered a
scholarship by A&M, continued to
haunt the Aggies, smashing a Barry
Smith pitch over the scoreboard for
a three-run homer, which gave the
Horns the lead for good, 16-11.
