for their family and for their com
munity, but the Heyes were just out
standing in their contributions to
A&M.”
The Heyes have four children.
The oldest, Bill, graduated from
A&M in December with degrees in
mechanical engineering and En
glish. The other three are currently
attending A&M. Pat, also majoring
in both mechanical engineering and
English, is scheduled to graduate
this December. Kathy is a junior
speech communications major, and
John is a freshman environmental
design major.
William Heye, Class of ’60, is a
former A&M Corps commander. He
was the speaker at Muster in 1982
and currently serves on the devel
opment councils of A&M, the Corps
of Cadets and the Memorial Student
Center. He also was roundtable
chairman at the Student Conference
on National Affairs in 1981.
He is currently vice president of
the consumer products division of
Texas Instruments.
Joan Heye was an official observer
at SCONA in 1983 and 1984. She
also is a member of both the Dallas
A&M Mothers’ Club and the Rich
ardson Women’s Club.
She works as a substitute secretary
and as assistant to the counselor at
JJ Pearce High School in Richard
son.
The Heyes both served as parent
advisers to the Class of ’85 and are
members of the Century Club.

That document was considered a
turning point in Catholic-Jewish re
lations.
Quoting from the document,
John Paul said the church “deplores
the hatred, persecutions, and dis
plays of anti-Semitism directed
against the Jews at any time and by
anyone.”
“I would like once more to ex
press a word of abhorrence for the
genocide decreed against the Jewish
people during the last war, which led
to the Holocaust of millions of inno
cent victims,” John Paul said.
He recalled his visit to the Ausch
witz concentration camp in his native
Poland in 1979.
“The Jewish community of Rome,
too, paid a high price in blood,”
John Paul said. A plaque outside the
synagogue is dedicated to the mem
ory of 2,091 Roman Jews deported
by the Nazis.
John Paul said it was a “significant
gesture” that church buildings in
Rome and the Vatican were opened
to give refuge to “so many Jews of
Rome being hunted by the persecu
tors.”
The pope drew applause when he
ended his speech by reciting a Psalm
in Hebrew.
Toaff called the visit, which began
at 5 p.m. and lasted an hour and 20
minutes, a “gesture destined to pass
into history.”
