A new project developed at A&M
is allowing volunteers to get a return
on their investment of love and care
for nursing home residents.
Project OASIS, Older Adults
Sharing Important Skills, not only
benefits the people with whom vol
unteers share their skills, but it also
benefits the volunteers, said Dr. Ju
dith Warren, co-director of the pro
ject and a gerontologist at the Texas
Agriculture Extension Service.
This program is designed to train
older adult volunteers to help serve
nursing home residents, Warren
said.
The volunteers help provide a
positive mental health atmosphere
within the nursing home, she said.
To provide this positive atmosphere,
volunteers help the residents with
their personal problems and with
sharing their feelings, Warren said.
Most of the volunteers are older
and losing friends or spouses. Pro
ject OASIS gives them a new group
of friends because they become close
by working together, she said.
Mary Ezell, a project volunteer,
said she thinks she learns from the
people.
“I learn something new every
day,” she said. ‘‘I didn’t ask for that
or expect it. I am the volunteer. I ex
pected to give, but I’m also receiv
ing.”
Ezell, who was a social activities di
rector at nursing homes in Missis
sippi, said she became interested in
the program because of her back
ground. The volunteers’ back
grounds and experience varies, she
said. Bui Warren says most of the
volunteers have had little experience
with volunteer work.
Ezell said, “I’m interested in giv
ing of some of what I have, which is
care and love, to those which are less
fortunate.”
Training sessions are conducted
for the volunteers to educate them
on various situations and
