The Aggies won with a time of 39.28 seconds — good Relays, A&M’s Floyd Heard, left, passes the baton to teammate Ar- enough to qualify for the NCAAs and this weekend's Texas Relays. By Ken Sury Assistant Sports Editor Members of the Texas A&M track and Held teams will enter the 59th Texas Relays as just faces in the crowd among the 2,000-plus entries in the meet. But the Aggies aim to leave Austin having made lasting, per haps record-setting, impressions. A& M , de spite finishing second in the Southwest Con ference Indoor Track and Field Track Championships earlier this year, will find a tough field of contestants awaiting them today and Saturday. “It's a very competitive field,” A&rM Assistant Coach Steve Sil- vey said. “It's almost like a NCAA championship meet.” The contestants in the meet were determined by qualifying standards set for the Texas Re lays, so individual performances will be stressed and team points will not be awarded at the meet. However, an outstanding team will he named. Eight Aggies will compete in field events at the Relays. Lead ing A&M will be freshman shot putter Randy Barnes, who is com ing off of Saturday’s College Sta tion Relays with the nation’s long est put by a college freshman at 67 feet, 7 l A inches. The remaining Aggies in the field events are: Chris Walker, long jump; Terence Strong, long and triple jump; Kenny Burke, high jump; Francisco Olivares, triple jump; Robert Graf, discus; Cassandra Perkins, women's dis cus; and Vernell Dunn, womens shot put. Much of the excitement of the meet will center on the trad events. A&M Assistant Coach Ted Nelson said Stanley Kerrmayrun in the invitational 100-metet dash, while Calvin Gaziano will compete in the mile run, Rickey Alexander in the high hurdles, and Craig Calk and David Henader in the intermediatehur dies. In the 400-and 800-meterrela; events, the Aggies will run the freshman-crew of Lawrence Pel-1 ton, Floyd Heard, Archie Robens | and Stanley Kerr. For the 1600-meter relay, Sil-1 vey said A&M’s team won’tbede l termined until the day of the race since there are about nine Aggies who can run in the event. In addition to Felton, Heard, I Roberts and Kerr, Maurice Holt, 1 Kendric Wesley, Matt Dunn, 1 Gary Pervis and Matt Washington B can run the 1600. For the A&M women, Beth K Drees will run the 5,000-meter I run and the relay team of Lisa I Langston. Novaita Samuels,Judi K Williams and Alexis Russell wil K compete in the 400-meter relay. I Ag medley relay team finishes 12th at NCAAs INDIANAPOLIS — The Texas A&M 400-yard medley relay team placed 12th at the NCAA Men’s Swimming Championships Thurs day. The team, made up of back- stroker Mike Kozlina, breastroker Jeff Garry, but- terflyer Chris O’Neil and freestyler Rob- MerTs Swimming ert Bullock, set a new A&M record in the event with a time of 3:18.69 for a ninth-place finish in the morn ing preliminaries. Since only the top eight times make the finals, the Aggies were seeded first in the consolation finals, but finished fourth with a time of 3:18.77. “They just missed being in the top eight, which are considered the best teams in the country, so we’re very pleased with their performance,” A&M Assistant Coach Tracy Johnston said. During the finals, Kozlina set a new A&M record during his back- stroke leg of the relay with a time of 50.39 seconds, shaving .6 seconds off his previous best time. Mavs nip Nuggets in final 4 seconds DALLAS (AP) — Rolando Blackman scored three of his 25 points on a driving layup and free throw with four seconds left to give the Dallas Mavericks a 115- 1 14 victory over Denver Thursday night. The victory pulled the Mavericks to within IV2 games of the second-place Nuggets in the NBA’s Mid west Division. Dallas’ Mark Aguirre had just missed two shots when Denver guard Lafayette Lever was stripped of the ball by Derek Harper in the backcourt. Harper fed Blackman, who was breaking for the basket. Blackman hit the tying shot as he was fouled by Alex English. A three-point attempt by Denver’s Bill Hanzlik was short as time expired. Aguirre scored 19 points for the Mavs and James Donaldson had 21 rebounds. Denver had taken 114-112 lead with 27 seconds left on a 12-foot jumper by English, who led all scorers with 28 points. Dallas, 42-34, moved to eight games over .500 for the first time this season and closed the gap on Denver, 44-33, for the third playoff spot in the Western Con ference. Rockets 136, Spurs 110 SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Akeem Olajuwon scored 25 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked five shots to pace the Houston Rockets to a 136-1 10 victory over the San Antonio Spurs Thursday night.
