lOAM - 4PM
WASHINGTON (A1‘) — The
Census Bureau is about to give its
1990 head count a spring tryout,
sending test forms to about 48,000
households across the nation.
Although the official census re
mains more than four years in the
future, the agency is already strug
gling with the logistics of counting
nearly a quarter-billion Americans,
and learning as much as possible
about them.
In addition to the census of pop
ulation and housing, proposals in
this or past years have ranged from
counting the nation’s dogs and cats
to asking people’s religious beliefs
and sex habits.
Census Director John G. Keane
says in a message to households re
ceiving the test questionnaires, “The
census is more than just a count of
-the -population, lt.Ls-a-chance for us
to take stock of ourselves as a people
and successfully meet future local
and national challenges.”
