The Long- i horns, 12-4 and SWC Basketball 17-10 overall, fell into a three-way tie for the confer ence title, their first since sharing it with Arkansas in 1979. Texas Chris tian and Texas A&M also finished the regular season at 12-4. Tech ended its regular season at 9-7, 14-13 overall. “You have to remember Texas had a lot of pressure on them,” Tech Coach Gerald Myers said. “There was a lot of emotion because of the championship situation.” Texas Coach Bob Weltlich re minded his players to be proud of their tri-championship, but berated them for lacking aggression on the boards. “What (the whole game) comes down to is our not rebounding their last shot,” Weltlich said. “That ball doesn’t have a chance of going in and we just froze out there. But then, we didn’t rebound well all day (grabbing 22 rebounds to 24 for lech). We just seemed flat-footed.” As a result of the loss, Texas ended up with the No. 3 seed for the SWC postseason tournament and will play sixth-place Houston in the first round Friday night. Other first-round games (seeds in parentheses) will match Texas Tech (5) vs. Southern Methodist (4), TCU (1) vs. Rice (8) and Texas A&M (2) vs. Arkansas (7). Patrick Fairs gave Texas a 62-61 lead with a 15-foot jump shot with 10 seconds left in the game. But Tech brought the ball downcourt without calling a timeout and got the ball to hot-handed Tony Benford. Benford missed a seven-foot jumper with five seconds left, but Chism muscled inside for the game winning tip-in. The Longhorns called time out with one second remaining, but couldn’t get a shot off in time. John Brownlee, who picked up his fourth foul with 8:48 left in the game, led Texas with 20 points. Fairs added 14. Benford was Tech’s high scorer with 18 points, and Chism came off the bench to score 17. Benford, who got 12 first-half points, scored Tech’s last four bas kets of the half to give the Red Raid ers a 30-25 lead at halftime. Tech center Ray Irvin, playing ag gressively underneath against Brownlee, got into foul trouble early. Ags win Bayou Classic to begin '86 season By CHAREAN WILLIAMS Assistant Sports Editor HOUMA, La. — Thirty-degree temperatures combined with a 20 mph wind don’t mix with softball. But Texas A&M defeated both the weather and six opponents dur ing its season-opening weekend to win the Bayou Classic. “It was too cold to be playing softball,” A&M ' " ' ' ' ■ Coach Bob Softball Brock said. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm “We showed some mental tough ness.” The Aggies went 6-0 in the tour nament, outscoring their opponents 27-1. “I’m happy with the way things turned out, but we found some things we need to work, on,” Brock said. “We didn’t hit the ball as well as we need to. I think we only hit .205 as a team. The weather had at least a little to do our lack of hitting.” A&M defeated Mississippi State 6- 0 in the first game as third baseman Cindy Cooper had a three-run homer, and freshman pitcher Julie Carpenter allowed only one hit while striking out 10. Carpenter didn’t allow a run in the tourney, going 3-0. “I think there were a lot of people that doubted Julie could play on the collegiate level,” Brock said. “I think she showed this weekend that not only can she pitch, but she can strikeout some people. “Shawn (Andaya) pitched great this weekend too. We are fixing to have a great one-two punch with Ju lie and Shawn.” Saturday morning against South western Louisiana, the game was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Andaya hit a home run on the first pitch to give the Ags a 2-1 win and herself a 2-0 pitching mark. In the championship game against Louisiana Tech, Andaya pitched a no-hitter as the Ags won 6- 0. A&M, which lost to the Bulldogs in regional play last season to end its bid for a seventh straight trip to the NCAA World Series, got two hits from freshman catcher Carrie Heightley. “I don’t know if it was revenge or not,” Brock said. “It was nice to win. It felt good, but it felt just like an other win.” Depth-thin Ag women finish 8th in SWC meet By KEN SURY Assistant Sports Editor squad to just four swimmers and di ver Terri Hurley.
