The Fabulous Thunderbirds
are the best blues band from
Texas. Although “Tuff Enuff 1
doesn’t prove that statement
fully, it snows that there is evi
dence to support my claim.
For those of you who don’t
know about the Fabulous
Thunderbirds, they are Kim
Wilson on lead vocals and har
monica, Fran Christina on
drums and Jimmie Vaughn,
Stevie Ray’s brother, on guitar.
“Tuff Enuff’ is the first album
the Fabulous Thunderbirds
have released with Preston
Hubbard on bass. Hubbard,
who joined the band two years
ago, has shown that he is a fine
replacement for Keith Fergu
son, who went off to form the
Tail Gators.
For those of you who do
know about the Fabulous
Thunderbirds, you have proba
bly been waiting for the release
of “Tuff Enuff” The band fin
ished recording the album at
the end oflast summer and the
album was about to be released
when the Fabulous Thun-
derbirds' record companv went
bankrupt. It took a while before
another label was found.
The title track, with its syn
thesizers and drum machines,
may turn some fans off. The
Fabulous Thunderbirds are
much better than ZZ Top they
shouldn't try to sound like
them. Don't worry, the album
gets better.
“Tell Me" gets away from the
synthesizers and takes the band
back to what they do best —
the blues. “Tell Me” also shows
why Wilson is one of the best
harmonica players in the busi
ness. “Look at That, Look at
That" shows why Vaughn is
equally good on guitar.
“Wrap it Up,” written by
Isaac Hayes and David Porter,
has a good '60s soul sound.
“Two Time My Lovin,” “Amne
sia,” “True Love” and “Don’t
Care” are pretty good but a
little bit dry. Only the instru
mental, “Down at Antones,"
comes close to capturing the
band’s live sound.
The Fabulous Thunderbirds
are great but their greatness
doesn't come through in a stan
dard three-minute song. Dave
Edmunds, the album’s pro
ducer, has done a good job cap
turing the Fabulous Thun
derbirds’ sound but their music
is too spontaneous to tit well in
the rigid format of an album.

“Stereotomv" marks a turn
ing point in mv relationship
with the Alan Parsons Project. I
refuse to buy another one of
their albums unless they show
me they’re going to quit
screwing around and start
making some interesting music
again.
Once upon a time I really
liked these guys. I was so im
pressed with their first four al
bums, “Tales of Mystery and
Imagination,” “I, Robot," “Py
ramid" and “Eve,” that I
bought everything else they put
out. After five very bad albums
and a silly greatest hits compi
lation, Fm tired of this.
I.ike all of their albums, “Ste-
reotomy” tries to tell a story.
This time it is a muddled story
about a rock star dealing with
the problems of fame. This al
bum is not an interesting
Freudian analysis of a rock star
like Pink Floyd's “The Wall.”
This is a boring album with all
the insight of a People mag
azine profile on a 13-year-old
twirler who’s blind.
The title track and “Beaujo-
lis” break away slightly from
the formula by using more per
cussion than is typical for the
band. “Light of the World” is
more of the same old stuff but
it’s good in a wimpy sort of
way.
Guitarist Ian Bairnson, who
has worked with Parsons on
most of the Project’s albums,
does his best David Gilmour
imitation on the instrumental
“Urbania" and “Where’s the
Walrus?" '"Chinese Whispers”
shows that Bairnson is a good
guitarist in his own right but
the song is much too short.
“Limelight” features Gary
Brooker, one of the founding
members of Procol Harum, on
vocals. The song doesn’t fully
take advantage of Brooker’s
soulful voice.
"Stereotomv" is somewhat
like a lobotomy — a part of the
brain has been removed.
