Red Raiders upset
frustrated Frogs
Associated Press
LUBBOCK — Texas Christian
Coach Jim Killingsworth felt it com-
ing.
An hour before Wednesday
night’s 62-52 loss to the Texas Tech
Red Raiders, Killingsworth said,
“This has been the longest day of my
life. I’m not sure we’re ready.”
TCU, which could have gained a
share of the SWC basketball title for
the first time in 15 years, wasn’t re
ady. The Horned Frogs turned the
ball over 15 times and shot miserably
from the field.
“I think we were awfully tight,”
Killingsworth said. “We just never
got anything going.”
Tech’s Tony Benford scored a ca
reer-high 25 points, including 14
points in the last five minutes to
hand TCU its worst loss of the sea
son.
“Tony had a great game and it
just might have been the best perfor
mance of the year for us,” Tech
Coach Gerald Myers said. “We
played smart basketball.”
Myers switched from a man-for-
m'an to a zone defense and that con
fused TCU.
“We couldn’t get anything to fall
after they did that,” Killingsworth
said.
TCU’s Carven Holcombe, Gregg
Grissom and Norman Anderson
were all slapped with technicals, and
Anderson was ejected from the
game for cursing referee Mike
Tanco.
“I have nothing to say (about the
three technicals),” Killingsworth
said. “4 have a hard time coaching,
much less officiating.”
Carl Lott kept TCU in the game
with 21 points and was the only
Horned Frog in double figures.
TCU, which hasn’t won an SWC
title since 1971, has now lost 12 of its
last 13 games in Lubbock. The
Horned Frogs fell to 12-3, along
with the Longhorns, and 20-6 over
all. Texas Tech improved to 13-13
and 8-7 in the SWC.
TCU is now in a first-place tie
with Texas in the SWC. The Frogs
play at Houston Saturday night,
while Texas hosts Texas Tech Sun
day in Austin.
“We really put ourselves into a
SWC Basketball
hole now for the Houston game,”
Killingsworth said. “We’d better play
better down there than we did to
night.”
SMU 78, Houston 71
DALLAS — Kevin Lewis led all
scorers ith 25 points as the Southern
Methodist Mustangs held off a sec
ond-half rally to defeat the Houston
Cougars 78-71 Wednesday night.
The victory increased the Mus
tangs’ record to 17-9 overall and 9-6
in the SWC. Houston dropped to 13-
12 and 7-7.
SMU led by as many as 21 points
late in the first half (42-21), and held
a 42-25 halftime lead. But Houston
narrowed the margin to eight points
at 60-52 with 8:15 left in the game,
before SMU went to a pressing de
fense to counter the Cougar attack.
SMU guard Butch Moore made a
key steal on a Houston inbounds
pass, and completed the layup to put
the Mustangs back on track at 70-58.
SMU’s Terry Williams scored 14
points. Houston was led by Greg An
derson and Alvin Franklin, each
with 19 points.
Baylor 65, Arkansas 64
WACO — Eric Johnson canned a
16-foot jump shot with just 34 sec
onds lef t to lift Baylor to a 65-64 vic
tory over Arkansas Wednesday
night.
Baylor, now 11-16 on the season
and 3-13 in the SWC, finishes its reg
ular season and will not play in the
postseason tournament next month
because of NCAA probation. Arkan
sas fell to 12-14 and 4-11.
The Bears scored the last eight
points of the contest to defeat Ar
kansas for the first time since 1982.
Eric Poerschke was good on and
18-foot jumper to give the Razor-
backs a 64-57 lead with 3:20 left.
Baylor then rattled off the last eight
to win.
Darryl Middleton led all Bears
with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Johnson was next with 12, followed
by Frank Williams’ 1 1 and Michael
Williams’ 10.
Lakers hand Mavs loss
in last minute, 119-116
Associated Press
DALLAS — Kareem Abdul-Jab-
bar scored 25 points and Magic
Johnson and Byron Scott added 21
apiece as the Los Angeles Lakers
benefitted from costly Dallas mis
takes in the final minute to hold off
the Mavericks 119-116 Wednesday
night.
The Lakers, who led 106-97 after
a basket from Johnson with 6:15 re
maining, watched as the Mavericks
made a 16-6 run to go ahead 113-
1 12 with 2:51 left.
Baskets by Michael Cooper and
Scott put Los Angeles back up 1 16-
1 13 with 1:27 to play, but Brad Davis
made one of two free throws to nar
row the gap to 116-114.
After a traveling call on Abdul-
Jabbar, Dallas lost an opportunity to
tie when the Mavericks failed to get
off a shot before the 24-second clock
expired. Then after a Laker miss, a
steal by Scott ruined Dallas’ second
shot at a tie.
Kurt Rambis made one of two
free throws with 35 seconds remain
ing to extend the lead to three.
A Mark Aguirre follow made it
117-116 at :27, but two Cooper free
throws gave Los Angeles its final
margin when Dallas’ Rolando Black
man missed a three-point try with
five seconds left.
Aguirre led the Mavericks with 28
points as Dallas lost its fifth straight
game.
