CASPER Aggies’ all-time leading scorer will lead A&M when it faces Rice tonight at 7 p.m. in Houston. By DOUG HALL Sports Writer With two of her starting five play ers nursing injuries, Texas A&M Coach Lynn Hickey will be just as worried about her team’s health to night as she will be about defeating the 7-17 Rice Owls. Freshman center Lisa Jordan, who led the Lady Aggies Saturday night against Houston with 16 points and 11 rebounds, missed Sunday’s practice due to a foot injury, as did starting forward Paula Crutcher who suffered a scratch to the eye that has left her wearing a patch. Hickey said the combination of taking the Owls too lightly and the injuries have left her a little cautious about Tuesday’s 7 p.m. game at Au try Court in Houston. “We have to be careful,” Hickey said. “This could be a very difficult game for us. I know last year we had to beat them on a last second shot. We can’t go out there and assume that we’ll beat them by 30 points like we did last time (in A&M’s 90-62 win at G. Rollie White Coliseum).” Hickey said the Lady Aggies will use their customary full-court pres sure defense to force the Lady Owls out of their set offense and into a running game. The second year coach, who has helped assure the Lady Ags of their first winning season in six years, said A&M must use its superior height to stop the Lady Owls’ Holly Jones, who is currently second in the Southwest Conference scoring race averaging 18.6 points a game. “We have got to play a tough pres sure defense and utilize our size,” Hickey said. “Holly Jones is a big danger. We really need to do a good job against her.” If Saturday’s 71-70 victory over the University of Houston was any indication of how A&M defenses the SWC’s top players, then Hickey should have little to worry about. The Lady Ags limited UH’s Sonya Watkins, the conference’s scoring leader (19.8 a game), to only seven first-half points, holding her scoreless for over nine minutes. But for Hickey, getting her team healthy before next week’s SWC postseason tournament in Dallas is just as important as beating Rice. Aggie men golfers win Pan Am title MONTERREY, Mexico — If last weekend’s Pan American University International Colle giate Golf Tournament is any in dication of the kind of spring the Texas A&M Men’s golf team is going to have, then Coach Bob Ellis has plenty to be happy about. The Aggie men, led by fresh man individual winner Roy Mackenzie, fought off a last round drought to take the team championship with a 54-hole total of 86/, live strokes ahead of sec ond-place Brigham Young. Mackenzie, a redshirt fresh man from Santiago, Chile, fin ished Sunday’s round with a 73 to put him in a three-way tie with Edward Herrera of BYU and Rice’s Houston Martin. “Roy just had a super week end,” Ellis said. “It is really good to get in the win column.” “It was a good field, but it was the type of teams we should beat,” he said. “There were 18 other teams in that tourney, and any one of them could have got ten hot and beat us.” Rockets launch comeback to edge Mavericks, 110-105 Associated Press HOUSTON — Houston’s Ralph Sampson scored 28 points and John Lucas sank four victory-clinching free throws in the final nine seconds of play to rally the Rockets to a 110- 105 NBA victory over Dallas Mon day night. The Rockets trailed 105-103 with 42 seconds to play on a basket by Jay Vincent, who scored 16 of his 31 points in the second half, including 12 straight Mavericks points. Robert Reid hit a fall away jumper to tie it with 25 seconds to go but missed the free throw after he was fouled. Sampson then put Houston ahead for good with 22 seconds to go on a free throw after he was fouled by James Donaldson, leaving game- winners for Lucas, who hit two free throws with nine seconds to play and two more with two seconds to go. Derek Harper scored 17 points for the Mavs and Houston’s Jim Pe tersen had 17. The Rockets fell behind by seven points, their biggest deficit of the game, at 83-76, late in the third quarter but scored 12 unanswered Other Monday NBA Scores: (home team in capitals) WASHINGTON 99 New Jersey 89 ATLANTA 102 L.A.
