The Texas A&M tennis teams
stayed undefeated at home this
weekend, but the Aggie women were
trounced in San Antonio by the na
tion’s third-ranked team.
A&M Women’s Tennis Coach
Bobby Kleinecke said the Aggies
were outclassed Saturday, 9-0, by
No. 3 Trinity, which has five of its
six singles players ranked among the
country’s Top 50.
“It’s difficult to judge where we
stand after those matches,” Klei
necke said. “We played a little flat,
but then Trinity has a really good
team. They beat (No. 5) Texas 7-2.”
Kleinecke said his biggest concern
now is the team’s opening confer
ence matches at Houston Tuesday.
“I think (the loss to Trinity) will
make them a little hungry,” he said.
“The matches against Houston will
probably go 5-4 — one way or the
other.
“They’re just barely ahead of us in
the rankings (UH is No. 22, while
A&M is No. 25). We’ll just have to
see who plays better Tuesday.”
At home Friday, the Aggie
women had little problems in stop
ping Louisiana Tech, winning 9-0.
The only match to go to three sets
was the No. 2 doubles contest which
Kim Labuschagne and Karen Mar
shall won 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 over Tech’s
Jill Urban and Pam Arledge.
In the other half of Friday’s dual
meet, the No. 15 A&M men de
feated Tech 5-2 before darkness
forced the cancellation of the No. 1
and 3 doubles matches.
In the No. 2 doubles match, fresh
man Brent Haygarth and senior
Kimmo Alkio beat Tech’s Mike
Whittington and Franz Kaiser 6-3, 6-
1.
The only singles defeats for the
Aggies Friday were Haygarth’s 6-3,
0-6, 6-3 loss to Trevor Salton, and
sophomore Chris Stanich’s loss to
Alan Trivett 6-2, 6-4.
But Haygarth and Stanich came
through against Arkansas-Little
Rock Saturday, helping the Aggies
post at 5-4 victory.
Haygarth defeated Robert Mc-
Cluskey 7-5, 7-5 in the No. 5 singles
match, while Stanich handed Magu-
nus Mobius a 6-4, 6-1 setback.
On Saturday’s win, A&M Men’s
Tennis Coach David Kent said, “We
played good, scrappy tennis. . . We
won a lot of the close matches, which
you have to do when you play the
tough teams.”
Alkio, despite tendinitis in his
right shoulder, stretched his un
beaten spring singles mark to 10-0
with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Anders
Mansson.
A&M’s No. 1 singles player
dropped only three games the entire
day as he and doubles partner Hay
garth beat Mobius and McCluskey 6-
0, 6-1 in the No. 2 doubles match.
Alkio and junior Marcel Vos
usually are the Aggies’ No. 2 tan
dem, but pulled muscles have side
lined Vos the past two weeks.
Kent said he hopes Vos is healthy
for Thursday’s Southwest Confer
ence opener in Waco against Baylor.
