Applause for the American Music
Tour filled G. Roliie White Coliseum
last night even if the people didn’t.
Bniy slightly more than 2,000
people whooped, stomped and hol-
jfered in response and appreciation
for five of the best country acts
|hville has to offer.
Formed to help revive country
music around the nation, the tour
featured Eddie Rabbitt, the band
Exile, Janie Fricke, T. G. Shepard
and Sylvia; each taking about 25
minutes on stage.
|Svlvia opened, on her own, doing
jd work on a tough job. A little
e pop than country-western, she
the audience moving and sing-
along with “Nobody” and a med-
of past hits including “Tumble-
Id” and "Drifter.”
ext up, T. G. Shepard started
with “Loved Them Every One”,
laying games with his Slow Burn
d and giving the audience back
ifinany compliments as they gave
lim. Cheers resounded for his “One
*ner Heart” as the band quit play-
g except for a pulsating, oass-
rum heartbeat.
The self-described hopeless ro
mantic ended to a chorus of distinc-
tively female screams w ith “Finally.”
Things slowed down a bit with this
year’s Grammy nominee, Janie
Fricke. She brought it back with over
six of her older top hits, like “It Ain’t
Easy Being Easy” and “He’s A
Heartache” and her recent “Easy to
Please.”
Exile came in after a 15-minute
intermission with “Promises” and
“Woke Up In Love” bringing at least
a dozen young women to the foot of
the stage with a pen in one hand and
a cowboy boot in the other. Exile, a
hard-driving band with few if any
pauses in their music didn’t stop to
sign any. Their “Give Me One More
Chance” brought its own standing
ovation and the band ended to a
boisterous, foot-stomping call for an
encore.
If the other acts helped bring the
people in, they were sure to stay for
Eddie Rabbitt. The songwriter-
turned-singer was the easy favorite
with “Rocky Mountain Music” and
“Driving My Life Away.”
Rabbitt was having fun and it
showed. Lit up by an infectious grin,
he had the audience call up his road
manager for a two-song, fiddle ses-

sion. What followed was a rousing
“Orange Blossom Special.”
The individually strong acts were
weak as a whole. The breaks be
tween acts dragged by, and each per
former had to recapture the spirit.
And attending a concert in the
coliseum was remniscent of a man-
Rollie White Coliseum.
datory high school assembly with its
steel folding chairs and empty con
crete bleachers.
Nevertheless, the stars were pro
fessionals. Not a word or a joke was
uttered about what had to be a dis
appointing turnout.
Coca-Cola to buy Dr Pepper for $470 million

Associated Press
Atlanta — Coca-Cola Co.,
ling to ensure it remains the na-
[s leading soft-drink producer,
Thursday it agreed to buy Dr
ierCo. for $470 million.
joca-Cola’s announcement came
Ithan four weeks after its archri-
Pepsico Inc., agreed to buy
il-ranked Seven-Up Co. for $380
lion, which would have lifted
fico to within a few percentage
points of Coca-Cola’s top standing in
the industry.
But by purchasing No. 4 Dr Pep
per, Coca-Cola would control about
46 percent of the domestic soft-
drink market, outpacing the com
bined 35 percent share held by Pep
siCo and Seven-Up, industry analysts
estimate.
Assuming both mergers pass gov
ernment scrutiny and are com
pleted, Coca-Cola and Pepsico alone
would then account for more than
80 percent of the market, which to
tals $30 billion annually.
Coca-Cola said under its prelimi
nary agreement to buy Dr Pepper,
which was approved by Coca-Cola’s
directors, the purchase price in
cluded Coca-Cola’s assumption of
$ 170 million of Dr Pepper debt.
Dr Pepper, based in Dallas, cur
rently is a private company owned
by the investment banking firm
Forstmann Little & Co. and a group
of Dr Pepper senior executives.
They purchased the company two
years ago for $650 million, after
which they sold off the company’s
Canada Dry division and nine bot
tling plants and other assets.
About 40 percent of the compa
ny’s products — which include Dr
Pepper, Diet Dr Pepper, Pepper
Free and Sugar Free Pepper Free —
are already bottled and distributed
by Coca-Cola bottlers.
