In the movie “F/X,” Rollie Tyler (Brvan Brown) is an F/x- pert who is so good at creating magic on camera that the gov ernment wants to hire him to do it for real. The Justice Department has a turncoat Mafia man, ready to testify against the mob. The mob will do anything to keep him off the witness stand so the Justice Department’s job is to keep the turncoat, Nicholas De- Franco (Jerry Orbach), alive un til he can testify against the Ma fia. To make it all more realistic, the Justice Department wants Tyler to stage DeFranco’s assa- sination in public to make the public and the Mafia believe DeFranco is really dead. After testifying, DeFranco would be set free and get a new identity, and Tyler would get paid. When the movie begins, Tyler has everything a F/X man could want: a great reputation, a beautiful actress girlfriend, a cute blond co-worker and a big van with F/X painted on the side. After the fake assassina tion he’s lost everything except the cute co-worker and he’s on the run. Fake deaths are a way of life for Tyler. He’s the best in the business at making death enter taining and still realistic- looking. But Tyler didn't count on the Justice Department turn ing on him. Ironically, Tyler's predica ment arises when he takes the black magic he creates off of the screen and puts it into ac tion in the real world. Bv doing so, the world of F/X are no longer a game for Tyler. His insulated paradise of mo\de magic is gone, replaced bv dark forces outside of his do main. Instead of being his profes sion, F/X becomes a method of survival. With F/X techniques, Tvler makes the Justice Depart ment and the local police look like Keystone Kops while they try to catch him. It’s what Joe Bob would probably call F/X- Fu. Rollie TVler (Bryan Brown) pretends to shoot Lipton (Cliff De Young) before taking some shots at Rosebud, the family pet.
