Union system that A&M is installing
will have the technological capability
to match Gov. Mark White’s method
for launching his re-election cam
paign.
White beamed his announcement
from a Houston schoolroom by sa
tellite transmission.
The installation of this system is
especially important to a major insti
tution such as A&M which is located
outside a major metropolitan area,
Stephenson says.
“There’s a lot of expertise here
which should be shared with people
elsewhere,” he says.
Faculty, staff or campus organiza
tions can initiate teleconferences for
seminars and other meetings or can
use the broadcasting option to tele
vise special events.
Programs in the Athletic Depart
ment, the Association, of Former
Students and some Memorial Stu
dent Center activities would be ideal
for the network, Stephenson says.
While the broadcasting option
seems the most exciting, the most
immediately available will be tele
conferencing.
The cost of teleconferencing
could be less expensive for an orga
nization than sending members
away to lectures and seminars.
It’s all technically possible, Ste
phenson says, but programming will
have to be worked out individually
on a contractual basis through
KAMU-TV.
KAMU will be the funnel through
which requests are sent to Western
Union.
Along with A&M related uses, the
system also could be used by news
media to transmit live news events at
A&M to any city in the TVS net
work.
Now, commercial networks bring
their own satellite dish, send a tape
back to the network by car or plane,
or simply don’t come at all, Stephen
son says,
The system’s use is not intended
to compete with the private sector
but will be a means of spreading the
word about A&M to a larger audi
ence.
RVs travel to New Orleans

The Corps of Cadet’s Ross Volun
teers and Fish Drill Team are in New
Orleans this week helping to keep
the Mardi Gras spirit alive.
Since the 1950s, the RVs have re
ceived an invitation to march in the
King Rex Parade, the biggest parade
at Mardi Gras.
Commander of the Ross Volun
teers Kevin Whitaker, said they
would leave Sunday morning and
stay through Tuesday, the day they
march in the parade.
After the nine-hour bus trip to
New Orleans, the RVs are given free
time until Monday night.
Whitaker said the RV’s favorite
place to spend that free time has al
ways been Pat O’Brien’s.
He said the fun won’t end on
Monday night because the New Or
leans Aggie Club is throwing them a
party at the Petroleum Club.
But Tuesday morning they’ll have
to go to work and march for four
hours in the King Rex Parade.

He said they get different reac
tions from the crowd as they march
along the nine-mile route.
“We go in as a stern-faced military
unit, not smiling or laughing,” Whi
taker said. “People try everything
they can to make us laugh.”
Yelling out the latest Aggie joke
and even pinching are the favorite
attempts to provoke laughter, he
said.
Whitaker said the crowds are just
trying to have a good time and
usually give them a good reception..
The schedule for the Fish Drill
Team is much different from the
RVs, said senior cadet Steve Lord.
Lord, former commander of the
drill team, said the drill team left
Thursday morning and wasn’t given
free time until Friday night.
He said all their time was spent
practicing for the Mardi Gras Drill
Meet on Friday by Tulane Univer
sity.
Lord said the drill team goes to
New Orleans strictly for this compe
tition between 16 ROTC units.
Marching in the Krewe of Iris Pa
rade on Saturday was secondary, he
said.
Three chaperones and eight ad
visers went with the drill team.
Saturday morning the drill team
marched in the Krewe of Iris Pa
rade.
Lord said every year several of the
drill team members are designated
as “booty gatherers.”
He said they wear civilian clothes
and follow the drill team as they
march.

and trinkets and whatever else the
crowd throws to them, he said.
