Neighbors said that they didn’t suspect anything because Davis, a truck driver, was sometimes gone for a week and the family went with him. Friends of the family said Mrs. Davis had asked them recently if they could teach her how to fire a gun and on two occassions discussed suicide, according to investigators. J.B. Brister, the neighbor who discovered the bodies, said that af ter Davis realized his wife’s mental condition was deteriorating, he dis assembled his .22-caliber rifle and locked it in a closet.
