CASPER Don Marbury gets perhaps the easiest of his 32 points as he and over a falling Baylor defender Saturday night in Waco. By CHAREAN WILLIAMS Assistant Sports Editor The best news for the rest of the Southwest Conference this week is that Texas A&M isn’t playing. At least one team won’t have to put another mark in its loss column because the Aggies are taking a break until Saturday night. They deserve it after last Saturday night’s game in Waco. A&M used everything it had to come up with a 62-58 win over last- place Baylor. “I’m glad to be out of here,” A&M Coach Shelby Metcalf said. The Bears were helped by the re turn of leading scorer Darryl Mid dleton and guard Eric Johnson, who completed their NCAA suspension. “They were much better with their people back,” Metcalf said. “They have a good basketball team. I expect them to get to the (SWC post season) tourney.” Metcalf figures the schedule worked in the Aggies’ favor. Since Middleton and Johnson were returning to the lineup for the first time, their timing was a bit off. Middleton hit 4-of-7 from the field for 10 points and had 10 rebounds, while Johnson could only muster eight points. “It worked to our advantage,” Metcalf said. “I didn’t think Middle- ton was back in top shape. They’re only going to get better. I’m just glad we played them now.” Using a tenacious halfcourt trap and the outside shooting of guard Todd Holloway (11 first-half points), the Aggies outscored the Bears 17-5 in the last eight minutes of the first half to take a 36-24 lead into halftime. But the first few minutes of the second half had Metcalf and his Ag gies a bit worried. Baylor guard Michael Williams scored six quick points to help the Bears make an 8-2 run to move within six points of the Aggies, 38- 32. “I thought we came out a little flat,” Metcalf said. “I wasn’t real pleased. It was a good thing we had that lead.” But guard Don Marbury made things better for the Aggies as he scored 32 total points, hit two free throws with 38 seconds left and A&M forward Winston Crite battles Baylor’s Robert McLemore for a rebound during Saturday Photo by ANTHONYS. But A&M was outrebounded 30- 26 by the aggressive Bears. “We shot well,” Metcalf said. “Our rebounding needs to pick up a little. We’ve let down in that area. Mike Clifford is rebounding good, but we are depending too much on Winston (Crite) and Jimmie (Gilbert). We have got to help them out.” Unfortunately for A&M, TCU and Texas also won to stay within a game of first-place. “We have some tough games ahead,” Metcalf said. “The biggest game of our season is always the next one. We have to play with emo tion and intensity or we will be in trouble.” ALPHA TAU OMEGA SPRING RUSH 1986 Ttp A,UU AM IKWI TAT* OH TO ATTENP A Happv Mtf’UR TbpAV Froki <3- b p-m- Thb Taus AT f'A vj I T"A l?|TA5- // FEB 3 INVITATIONAL 6 FEB 5 DAY PARTY B, HAPPY HR AFTER, FEB 6 DEER HUNTER PARTY FEBQ SOUTH OF THE BORDER RUSH CHAIRIVIAN Steve Price 633 — 2368 ATO HOUSE ~7~7B - 3 213 2310 S.
