I think my older dog’s biggest kick in life is to just try and outsmart me, which is pretty often.” Joel Finch of Richmond trains dogs professionally in obedience and as guard dogs. He trains only his own dogs to work livestock and he brought a few to the trials. “I train dogs all day long for other people and I don’t have much time for my own,” Finch said. “I try to spend time with all of them — qual ity time like with a child.” Finch pointed to the dog at his feet and said, “We’re pretty close. He’s my shadow. But I’ve got an old dog at home that’s about nine-years- old. He’s my best friend ” Rohne said the dogs enjoy what they do. He said the dogs like work ing livestock and they want to please their owners. He motioned at a dog working sheep in the arena. “Look at the sparkle in her eye,” Rohne said. “She’s looking at him (the owner) wanting to please him.” Rohne said the dogs are just like people. Too many people come to these trials and expect their dogs to run like machi nes.” Despite the importance of the work the dogs do, most owners feel their dogs are at their best when they’re companions. “They’rejust good buddies to ride up and down the road with,” Rohne said. “They’rejust a good friend.” attox says report is political attack tic Associated Press DALLAS — State Attorney Gen- Jim Mattox Sunday labeled a spaper report that he received ,000 from the proceeds of a as-area land deal which is one of Idreds under a federal grand ry s scrutiny as “distorted” and “a Itical attack.” tn a story Sunday, the Dallas ni Ifning News said the money was Ivered to Mattox a month after he $ elected attorney general at a ■2 fundraiser at the direction of D.L. “Danny” Faulkner. Faulkner is a condominium devel oper whose projects are under inves tigation, and a longtime friend and business associate of Mattox. According to real estate records, the money was paid from the sale of 21.5 acres of undeveloped land. Witnesses to the transaction say Mattox accepted the money al though he had no investment inter est in the property or any partici pation in the sale, the News reported. Mattox, responding in a prepared statement Sunday to the Morning News story, called it “negative” and “distorted.” Mattox said he and Faulkner have been partners in several real estate deals. Mattox’s statement described the payment as a commission for putting together a seller and buyer for 21 acres of condominium land. The deal was handled by Faulkner, the statement said. Court documents, including Faulkner’s deposition, show the money was delivered to Mattox as two cashiers checks for $100,000 .each, one of them payable to Mat tox’s sister and the other payable to his brother. Mattox said he was uncertain why his sister’s name appeared on one of the checks. He said the money actu ally was intended for Mattox Prop erties.
