Rockets end
Kings 1 reign
at 3 games
Associated Press
HOUSTON — Houston’s Akeem
Olajuwon and Robert Reid took up
scoring slack for Ralph Sampson,
who was ejected from the game, and
led the Rockets to a 124-107 victory
over the Sacramento Kings Thurs
day night.
The victory
snapped the
Kings’ winning
streak at three
and gave the
Rockets a 22-1
home court re
cord this season.
Olajuwon, playing with four fouls
throughout the fourth quarter,
scored 22 points and Reid led all
scorers with 23 points.
LaSalle Thompson led the Kings
with 22 points and Eddie Johnson
added 21, including 13 in the second
half.
Sampson helped the Rockets to a
59-53 halftime lead with 12 points
and five rebounds but he was ejected
with 7:05 to go in the third quarter

after receiving two technical fouls.
Sacramento’s Otis Thorpe re
ceived a technical moments earlier
after scuffling with Sampson under
the Rockets’ basket.
Sampson then fouled Thorpe and
was ejected when he protested.
Despite Sampson’s departure, the
Rockets pulled to a 98-85 lead at the
end of the third period and spurted
to a 105-87 margin early in the
fourth quarter, and continued to ex
pand the lead.

Hubert Green birdied his last hole
for an 8-under-par 63 and a one-
stroke lead in the first round Thurs
day of the $500,000 Phoenix Open
Golf Tournament.
“A fun round of golf,” said the 39-
year-old veteran, who scored his
19th career victory in the 1985 PGA
national championship. “I’m close to
doing it the way I want to.”
Green scattered nine birdies
across his card, including a 20-footer
on his last hole at the Phoenix Coun
try Club that gave him sole posses
sion of the top spot.
A single stroke back at 64 was a
starry group made up of the defend
ing title-holder, Calvin Peete, for
mer PGA champ Hal Sutton, the
white-haired Australian Greg Nor
man and Larry Mize.
Norman, the massive hitter who
has come to be known as the “Great
White Shark,” inadvertently violated
a standard of golf etiquette when he
drove the green on a par-4 hole, hit
ting into a crouched Jack Nicklaus.
Nicklaus was hunkered over a bir
die putt when Norman’s drive
trickled across the green on the 320-
yard hole.
“I saw the ball out of the corner of
my eye, and stepped back from the

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Betsy
King and Judy Dickinson scored 4-
under par 68s Thursday to tie for
the first-round lead in the $200,000
Mazda Classic, the opening tourna
ment on the LPGA’s 1986 schedule.
King and Dickinson were one
stroke ahead of veteran Beth Daniel
and two young players who have yet
to win an event, Australian Jane
Grafter and rookie Tammy Freder-
ickson.
Nine players are tied at 70, includ
ing three former champions. Hollis
Stacy, who won last year and in
1982, is joined at 2-under by 1981
winner Sandra Palmer, 1984 winner
Silvia Bertolaccini of Argentina and
Robin Walton.
Pat Bradley, runner-up to Nancy
Lopez for 1985 Player of the Year,
was one of 11 players at 72.
JoAnne Garner, within $68,810 of
becoming the LPGA’s first career $2
million winner, is in a large pack at
73.
