Lendl
Aerobics
by Lori
(continued from page lb)
German cpming from the crowd,
Becker held serve at 15 to begin the
second set, the Final two points corn
ing on his fourth and fifth aces of
the match. He then broke Lendl’s
service — only the second time
Lendl’s serve had been broken dur
ing the tournament.
Becker raced to a 3-0 lead when
he held at 30, finishing the game
with a smash.
Lendl held to 5-3, then broke
Becker at 30. And when he held
service in the 10th game, they were
tied 5-5.
Becker had a set point at 30-40 in
the 12th game, but Lendl crushed
his sixth ace, pulling to deuce. And,
two points later, he had forced the
set into a tiebreaker.
Becker began the tiebreaker with
a double-fault, but Lendl gave the
mini-break right back when the Ger
man hit an inside-out forehand deep
into the corner for a winner.
It was the last point Becker would
win in the tiebreaker and Lendl was
just one set away from the third Mas
ters title of his career.
With both players racing around
the court, retrieving seemingly im
possible “gets,” making what looked
to be sure winners, Becker dove to
his right and volleyed the ball into an
open court. But Lendl, somehow,
raced at full speed and, just before
the ball bounced a second time,
whipped a forehand that sailed over
the net and over the prone Becker
for the winner.
The crowd stood and cheered.
The fans stood again when, on the
final point of the third game, Becker
racecf after a winning volley that he
couldn’t reach, but his momentum
took him through the railing sur
rounding the court.
Still fighting, he came back,
breaking Lendl in the fifth game
and holding service in the sixth to
pull even. But he would not win an
other game.
Lendl held in the seventh game at
30, broke Becker at 30 in the eighth,
then closed out the match with a love
game.
“I’ve given my best all three sets
long,” Becker told the crowd after
the match. “I had a chance to win in
the second set, but that’s tennis.
