Aggie named All-American
Carrington selected to GTE Academic football team
By KEN SURY
Assistant Sports Editor
“Dumb jock” is a popular stereo
type used by people who look down
on athletes, especially football play
ers.
But that label fails to describe
Texas A&M defensive back Kip Cor-
rington.
This week Corrington was named
to the 1985 GTE Academic All-
America Team. Players were se
lected by the 1,200-member College
Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA) based on their
athletic and academic achievement.
“Obviously it’s an honor to make
this team as a sophomore,” Corring
ton said. “I thank the SID’s for vot
ing me the honor, but mainly I
thank my coaches and professors for
giving me the opportunity to be con
sidered. My education is important
to me and a recognition like this
helps keep me going.”
Corrington, the Son of Dennis and
Vicky Corrington of College Station,
was a four-sport athlete at A&M
Consolidated High School. His fa
ther is the director of A&M’s intra
mural department.
A sophomore philosophy major,
Corrington carries a 3.94 grade
A&M’s Kip Corrington
point average. He also was named
the outstanding student in the Col
lege of Liberal Arts.
“He was an outstanding student in
high school and when I recruited
him I told him he was going to get
me a trip to New York his senior
year for being a Football Hall of
Fame Student Athlete and it looks
like he’s going to get me there,” said
A&M Coach Jackie Sherrill.
Corrington ended the 1985 A&M
football season with five pass inter
ceptions, second in the Southwest
Conference. He returned one inter
ception 40 yards for a touchdown
against Baylor. Corrington also had
63 total tackles and two fumble re
coveries on the year. On Nov. 16, he
made his biggest tackle of the season
when he stopped Arkansas’ Bobby
Joe Edmonds on a fourth-down play
to seal A&M’s 10-6 win.
Being both an athlete and a stu
dent takes a lot of time out of a play
er’s schedule, but Corrington said he
works it to his advantage.
“It actually helps me regiment my
time,” Corrington said. “By playing
football it forces me to schedule the
rest of my hours to get studying
done. This season was a little harder
because it was easy to get excited
about the games. And we’ve had
some big games.
“I’m real happy with getting the
good grades, but I’m especially
happy with the team aspect. That’s
the most exciting thing.”
Corrington said since the Cotton
Bowl is still three weeks away he
hasn’t been too thrilled to forsake
studying for finals. He added that
this week the team had regular prac
tices just like any other week this se
mester. But the team will have a
short break for finals and Christmas
before meeting Auburn Jan. 1.

Rockets scorch Mo vs
with late-minute rally
Associated Press
HOUSTON — Akeem Olajuwon scored 27 points and pulled down 15
rebounds to lead the Houston Rockets to a 123-120 win Thursday night
over the Dallas Mavericks in a National Basketball Association game.
Houston was trailing 118-112 with 2:54 left to play, but scored 10
straight points to seize a 122-118 lead with 41 seconds left.
A Rolando Blackman basket pulled the Mavericks to within two, but a
free throw by Mitchell Wiggins with four seconds left put Houston ahead
123-120. The Mavericks had a chance to tie, but Blackman’s three-point
shot was short at the buzzer.
Houston, 17-7 and the Midwest Division leader, won its 14th home
game and remains the only National Basketball Association team that is un
beaten at home this season.
Dallas, 11-11, was led by Sam Perkins with a season-high 31 points and
Jay Vincent with 25.
The Mavericks played without their leading scorer, Mark Aguirre —
who was ill — and lost for the fourth time in their last five games.
Perkins pitched in nine points in the first four minutes of play as the
Mavericks jumped ahead of the Rockets 15-6. But Houston battled back,
outscoring the Mavericks 9-2 in the final three minutes of the first quarter
to cut their deficit to 32-27.
Houston reeled off nine straight points to tie the Mavericks 36-36 with
9:25 left in the first half. The Rockets took their first lead 46-45 with 6:18
left aftCr a pair of buckets by Robert Reid.
