HOUSTON — Texas prison in
mate Steve Duplantis spent last
Christmas behind bars, but this holi
day season will be different.
Duplantis will be the guest of a
Houston family taking part in a pilot
program that is intended to help re-
nabnitate prisoners through Cln ist.
“We hope to strengthen the in
mates by showing them that we
care,” said Ed Williamson, president
of Prison Fellowship, a non-profit,
service-oriented organzation.
Williamson said the aim of the
group is to teach prisoners to use
their new-found faith as the basis for
a better life.
Duplantis, 27, was sent to prison
in 19/5 on a robbery conviction. He
was released, but sent back to prison
following a burglary conviction in
1983.
All of the inmates chosen to take
part in the five-day furlough are ac
tive participants in religious activities
at their prison units. Each is a prison
trustee, a status that affords them
with more responsibility than is
given to regular prisoners.
During their leave, inmates will be
