Friday, December 6,1985/The Battalion/Page 3 ed FalunS)akM ; • State and Local £ wOTPr, Halbouty building to receive $3.6 million renovation job By CRAIG RENFRO Stall Writer | 'A $3.6 million renovation of the Halbouty Geosciences Building is scheduled to begin by the first of the year, said Wesley Peel, vice chan cellor for facilities planning and con struction. ■phen completed, the building will house the Center for Tectono- physics, the geophysics and geoche mist ry research and teaching labs and the geology department head’s office, said Christopher Mathewson, director of the Center for Engi neering Geosciences. ^Currently the building has an in adequate layout for a modern col lege of geosciences,” Mathewson said. Hfhe principle reasons for the ren ovation are inadequate cooling and heating, leaks in the walls anti roof and rusty windows, Mathewson said. Peel said, “Over the years, the wa terproofing has deteriorated and water has seeped through the walls. The air conditioning system is in horrible shape and the windows are those old steel-case windows, and they have warped to the point where they won’t close. Replacement of the windows will be a major im provement.” In addition to being electrically re-wired, Peel said, new plumbing facilities will be installed, a new heat ing and cooling system added and a new foam roof applied. “We are bringing it up to date so that it will be a more useful structu re,” Peel said. “Structurally it’s sound, but the walls and windows are bad.” Peel said the only parts of the building that will be left untouched will be the main lobby, which has been recognized by the Texas His torical Commission for its unique tile design, some stained glass windows and an auditorium on the first and second floor. “We are taking extra efforts to preserve the historical parts of the building,” said Facilities Planning and Construction architect Joe Wil liams. The Texas A&M System Board of Regents approved the contract bid of Starstone Construction of Hous ton to do the refurbishing, Peel said. The project, scheduled for com pletion in the spring of 1987, will limit the amount of office, research and classroom space for the College of Geosciences, Mathewson said. “It will be a strain on everybody in the place because of lack of space,” he said. “The research labs will have to double up.” Faculty and graduate student of fices will be moved to the new addi tion of Halbouty, and geoscience classes will be taught in various buildings around campus, he said. The LRC already has a large collection of material on a wide variety of topics. “Right now we have a collection of 12 notebooks full of articles that range in topics from goal setting to time management to developing study skills,” Tantzen says. “We are also receiving subscvip\ tions to several magazines and have collected numerous books on'moti vation, effective leadership and how to write and speak more effectively.” Open to all students, Tantzen says, the LRC is an excellent re source for anyone who wants to im prove himself. “The LRC is primarily being used by people in the MSC,” Tantzen says. “But it is also a resource for Student Government, the Corps, the — any one who desires to grow in their leadership capabilities — who is pur suing excellence.” To use the LRC, one must fill out a check-out card and give it to the at tendant on duty in the MSC Brows ing Library. “Students can check out material for a three-hour period,” Tantzen says. “But the materials cannot leave the Browsing Library. We hope to change this policy in the future, but we don’t have the funds, right now, to replace materials that are lost or stolen.” - Lhe new center is relatively small, but Tantzen says there are plans for expansion. “It’s a constantly growing center,” Tantzen says. “We are planning to do some workshops in the spring and hope to build up an audio and video cassette library.
