Oklahoma nose guard wins '85 Lombardi
Associated Press
HOUSTON — Oklahoma nose
guard Tony Casillas was named
Thursday night as the 1985 winner
of the Lombardi Award, which an
nually goes to the player deemed as
the nation’s top collegiate lineman.
Casillas, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound se
nior, had 35 tackles, four for losses
and two quarterback sacks in seven
games this year for the Sooners, who
play Southern Methodist Saturday.
He missed two games with an injury.
Other finalists for the trophy, pre
sented in honor of the late National
Football League coach Vince Lom
bardi, were Boston College nose
guard Mike Ruth, Oklahoma State
defensive tackle Leslie O’Neal and
Michigan defensive tackle Mike
Hammerstein.
Lombardi, who coached the
Green Bay Packers and the Wash
ington Redskins, died in September
1970 of cancer.
The Downtown Rotary Club of
Houston presents the award at a
benefit dinner, with the proceeds
going to the American Cancer So
ciety for cancer research. Officials
Saia this year’s benefit will raise the
event’s contributions over the $1
million mark.
Virginia Tech’s Bruce Smith, the
NFL’s No. 1 overall pick by the Buf
falo Bills, earlier won the Outland
Trophy, given to the nation’s top in
terior lineman.
Smith was not a finalist for the
Lombardi Award.
Hammerstein, 6-3, 265, led Michi
gan in tackles for losses this season

fensive tackle, had 93 tackles, nine
quarterback sacks and 15 tackles for
losses to key the Oklahoma State de
fense.
