Water as fuel source merits study_
Research center built at A4
University News Service
A research center dedicated to in
creasing the technology needed to
use hydrogen derived from water as
an inexpensive source of fuel has
been formally established at Texas
A&M. —
and clean-burning, its use as f uel for
modern machines has been a recur
ring dream of mankind, said Bockris.

acclaim.

The Hydrogen Research Center,
headed by' Dr. John Bockris, a chem
ist, and coordinated by senior scien
tist Dr. Benjamin Scharifker, has
already established a track record for
innovation at the University through
years of scientific studies.
The center’s framework was estab
lished in 1982 with a grant from the
National Science Foundation, which
continues to fund the research.

Most recently the center’s scientists
have developed a working laboratory
model of a system that separates hyd
rogen sulfide into hydrogen and sul
fur — both of which could be sold.
Center manager Bill Craven pre
dicts that funding from the private
sector will almost totally support the
Hydrogen Research Center in the
near future. An energy company and
two gas and electric power institutes
along with private donations now
provide outside support for the re
search efforts.

AGGIELAND REFUND POLICY
Yearbook fees are refundable in full during
the semester in which payment is made.
Thereafter no refunds will be made on
cancelled orders. Yearbooks must be picked
up within 90 days from time of arrival as an
nounced in The Battalion.
Students who will not be on campus when
the yearbooks are published, usually in
September, must pay a mailing and handel-
ing fee. Yearbooks will not be held, nor will
the be mailed without the necessary fees
Poisonous and flammable,
hydogen sulfide continues to be a
costly problem for petroleum pro
ducers. If economically feasible, the
separation of hydogen sulfide by this
new method could be an innovation
for large-scale oil producers.
Because hydrogen is renewable
“At present, industrial hydrogen is
derived from steam reforming of
natural gas, making the price more
expensive as the cost of natural gas
rises,” Bockris said. “As a commodity,
hydrogen is used in the production of
ammonia for fertilizer.

The Memorial Student Center
Council Monday approved MSC
Town Hall’s request to allow the
group to negotiate contracts with
Ronnie Milsap, Spyro Cyra, Steve
Wariner and Joan Rivers for the
spring.
MSC
Council President Denis
Davis said the council’s approval of
the performers does not mean they
will come to A&M.
“It shows that we feel this is a good
program to bring to campus,” she
said, “and that it fills a need and is
financially efficient.”
During the meeting, Tim Fitzgib-
bon, vice president of educational
programs, reported on the MSC Poli
tical Forum’s E.L. Miller Lecture
Series, fhe series is a two-day confer
ence, which this year was dedicated to
exploring “T he Future in Space.”

funds that make the programs possi
ble. If Cooper Industries considers
this year’s lecture series to be a suc
cess, Davis said it would provide a
$500,()()() permanent endowment to
the program.
In other business, the council
approved La Posada, a program co
sponsored by MSC Hospitality and
MSC Committee for the Awareness
of Mexican-American Culture. MSC
Hospitality Chairman Olga Perez-
Garcia said La Posada is a Hispanic
tradition, which recreates Joseph’s
and Mary’s search for a place to stay.
Perez-Carcia said the program will
begin at the All Faiths Chapel next
Tuesday at 6 p.m. She said the group
will progress to several dorms and
end at the MSC.
