A huge hound named Higgins is

xas A&M.
Higgins Schultz, a 195-pound Old
Biglish Mastiff from Dallas, is out

sjfcgan, “Higgins is hungry for your
tines.”

gins must receive more public votes

i) IUQV Higgins spends his days taping inter
views and munching Purina prod
ucts.
Higgins’ strategy is clear in this
contest and he makes no bones
about his promises to his constitu
ents: to let sleeping dogs lie, to teach
old dogs new tricks, to let every dog
have his day and, in all issues of im
portance, to go to the dogs.
Also, Higgins believes he’s more
than qualified to be Purina’s “Great
American Dog” because he eats Pu
rina products regularly.
Higgins admits, though, that occa
sionally he succumbs to cravings for
his favorite junk foods — Kleenex
tissues and cheese weiners.
During voting week, Higgins is
devoting all his time to his campaign
and not his cravings.
Higgins’ aides are out distributing
fliers of his “Hound Profile” which
include personal information on the
pooch such as: his favorite color,
bone; his favorite song, “You Ain’t
Nothing But A Hound Dog;” and
his goal in life, to be the winner of
the Purina Dog Chow contest so that
he can win $25,000 for his owners, a
ride in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day
Parade with Betty Thomas of “Hill
Street Blues” and to have his picture
on eight million packages of Purina
Dog Chow.
Schultz said she decided to enter
Higgins in the contest after seeing
an ad in a magazine about last year’s
contest.
Schultz said she believed her
“gentle giant” was unusual enough
to have a chance.
Schultz said she sent in a photo of
Higgins and an essay describing his
particular canine charms, and was
thrilled and surprised when she was
notified that Higgins was a finalist.
The finalists and their owners will
be flown to New York City Sunday
and the winner will be announced
Tuesday.
Owner Renee Schultz with “Higgins’
Schultz said the winner will stay to
ride on a float in the Macy’s Thanks
giving Day Parade.
“Everyone needs to watch the par
ade,” Schultz said. “That way, if you
see Higgins, you’ll know we won!”
Schultz said she and her husband
haven’t thought about what they’d
do with the $25,000 if Higgins wins,
but they’re sure Higgins would get
some very special treatment.
“We’d get Higgins a fancy house,”
Schultz said, “probably with a star
above the door.
“Yes, we’d set up Higgins to live a
dog’s life!”

A&M student groups accepting
donations for Colombian relief
By JUNEPANG
Staff Writer
The president of the Colombia
Students Association at Texas A&M
hopes his fellow Aggies can lend
some help to his people back home.
“A lot of people have lost their
homes, their lands, their families,”
says Ronald Guaiy. ‘“We need to help
them.
A volcano erupted Nov. 14 near
Armero leaving more than 25,000
people dead and thousands of oth
ers homeless.
CSA has set up a table in the Me
morial Student Center to take dona
tions. Also the International Stu
dents Association has set up a table
in the Blocker Building to accept do
nations for the needy in Colombia.
The CSA also has set up a bank
account at University National Bank
for cash donations. All the donations
will be sent to International Red
Cross and then will be transferred to'
Colombia. _
Armero, the largest town near the
volcano, was devastated by a mud
slide caused by melted snow.
“Eighty-five percent of the town is
destroyed.” Gualy said.
He said people living there had
known the volcano was restless, but
did not evacuate because they didn’t
know when or if it would erupt.
“If you are going to tell people to
leave their home, their land, just be
cause something may happen, a lot
of people will not leave,” he says.
“Besides, they don’t have insurance.
If they lose, they just lose every
thing, like they did.”
Gualy said he and other Colom
bian students at A&M are worried
about their country, especially since
the disaster came only about one
week after a government confronta
tion with leftist guerrillas in the Pal
ace of Justice. The confrontation re
sulted in 109 deaths, including six
Supreme Court judges.
Gualy said the Nevado del Ruiz
volcano was a tourist attraction be
cause it was one of the few places in
Colombia where it snowed.
