Saberhagen, 21, was 20-6 with a 2.87 earned run average in his sec ond major-league season. He had 10 complete games, with one shutout, and struck out 158 in 235 innings. The right-hander easily outdis tanced New York Yankees left hander Ron Guidry. Saberhagen, who also received four second-place votes, collected 127 points. Guidry had four first-place votes, 22 for sec ond and was picked third on two bal lots. He finished with 88 points. Guidry was the only pitcher named on all 28 ballots — two writ ers from each of the AL’s 14 cities. Saberhagen was not selected by Ray Sons of the Chicago Sun-Times, w ho had Minnesota’s Bert Blyleven first, Royals reliever Dan Quisenberry second and Guidry third. Saberhagen was the Royals’ ace, KC’s Bret Saberhagen leading Kansas City’s charge to the AL W'est title, the American League pennant and World Series. He pitched complete games to win the third and seventh games of the Se ries, though his postseason achieve ments diet not figure in the voting, which was conducted prior to the playoffs. At one point, Saberhagen won seven consecutive decisions and had another five-game winning streak. As a rookie in 1984, Saberhagei was 10-11. Guidry, who won the award ii 1978, was 22-6 with a 3.27 ERA, two shutouts in 11 complete games 143 strikeouts in 259 innings this year. Guidry, 35, rebounded from die worst season of his nine-year career — Ik* was 10-11 in 1984 —to hell the Yankees finish second intheAl East. He won six of his last seven starts and had a streak in which he won 12 straight decisions. Blyleven, the league’s strikeout leader with 206, was third with points. He was a combined 17- with a 3.16 ERA for Cleveland at the Twins, to whom he was tradedie August. Blyleven had one first-plact vote and four for third. Points were awarded on a M-l basis. Spurs, Mitchell nudge Nets 3AIM AIMTOmia Associated Press SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio forward Mike Mitchell was listed as doubtful going into Monday night’s game against New Jer sey because of a collision last week with the Phila delphia 76ers’ Charles Barkley. But it was a good thing for the Spurs that Mitchell played despite injuring hi.s knee. He scored 30 points and played sticky defense to lead San Antonio to a 111-104 National Basketball Asso ciation victory. “The big key tonight was Mitch coming out and playing with that bad knee. He takes a lot of pressure off the rest of us,’’ said Spurs for ward Steve Johnson. “Mitchell gave us a great effort. He amazes me with those knees hurting but he never misses a game," Coach Cotton Fitzsimmons added. Mitchell, who has a history of knee injuries, said, “As long as we can run, we have a distinct advan tage. It got a little physical late in the f ame. But that happens in the NBA. on have to expect it.” Mitchell’s 18 points in the first half, combined with a defensive ef fort that held Nets forwards Mike O’Koren and Mike Gminski to a combined two points, helped the Spurs to a 7-point halftime margin, 54-47. From that point on, the Nets never came closer than four points as the Spurs boosted their recordto 5-4.
