Nope. Try the Southwest Conference. And Texas A&M fans every where, big and small, are hoping a national E.SPN audience is treated to a lot more than static when the Ag gies host No. 20 SMU Saturday. The difference between whoop ing and crying for the A&M faithful should be decided on the line of scrimmage. SMU handed the Texas Long horns a textbook illustration of power football in last week’s 44-14 rony Parade.” Alternating tailbacks Reggie Du- pard and Jeff Atkins ran up, over and through the Texas defense. SMU’s multi-talented quarterback, Don King, triggered the big plays that have become his trademark. aiso alternate two cr approximately the sti by the fourth qu two games, Coach Meanwhile, the swarming Mus tang defense forced the ’Horns to pass the ball — a.k.a lose the game. When the Mustangs have the ball they alternate two of fensive lines, av eraging 6-foot-5, 265-pounds. They also alternate two defensive lines of same dimensions. |uarter of all but games, L.oach Bobby Collins’ ’Stangs have usually beaten their op ponents into submission and their rony Express II” tailback tandem have felt obligated to rush for about six million yards. And that’s why the Aggies are worried about the “Mustang Ma shers” kicking dirt in their faces. However, for the Aggies to corral the Mustangs, they’ll need to prove that the best defense is a good of fense. A&M will need to establish its fullback power running game, ala Roger Vick and Anthony Toney, to open up the passing lanes for Aggie quarterback Kevin Murray. importantly, the Aggies ball w" More need to move the ball with more con sistency than they’ve shown in the past three outings. Murray will sriow SMU Saturday at 6:45 p.m. in Kyle Field that he’s a little more potent than UT’s Todd Dodge and Brett Stafford combined, multiplied and magnified — Aggies 24, Mustangs 21. Texas Tech at Texas Noon — Raycom Sports Memorial Stadium Austin Texas Tech has a pretty good de fense. Texas has a pretty bad of fense. The possibilities are endless. The Horns have learned one of fensive lesson the hard way — you can move the ball by passing. However, for UT to beat Tech, it will have to produce in its vaunted ground game for the first time in ive weeks. For Tech to beat Texas, it will have to move the ball consistently from the wishbone formation and avoid any tbird-and-Iong situations. One interesting side note: Did you see what the Texas defense dia to the Oklahoma Sooners’ wishbone? Texas isn’t that dominant of a team this season. But Tech isn’t Ok lahoma — Longhorns 20, Red Raid ers 13. f, Houston at TCU 2 p.m. — No TV (thank goodness) Amon Carter Stadium Fort Worth Who cares? Both teams are win- less in the SWC (0-4) and going no where fast. This game is only important to TCU Coach Jim Wacker, UH Coach Bill Yeoman and the players’ mum mies and daddies. Yeoman is the “Father of the Veer,” but this year’s Cougar offense looks more like an abortion. The Horned Frogs, meanwhile, followed a humilating loss to Rice with a debilitating 45-1) smacking by No. 13 Baylor last week. So just how bad are these two teams.-' Well, they’ve been outscored a col lective 121-337 by SWC foes and show little hope of altering their los ing ways, until this week. Both TCU (2-5) and UH (1-6) know their best chance for another win this season is this game. And both coaches wall be ready- too bad their teams won’t be - Horned Frogs 17, Cougarsl6. Arkansas at Rice 2 p.m. — No TV (too bad) Rice Stadium Houston This is my favorite matchup of the week. Rice, which now fly — a.k.a pass — only when necessary because of quarterback Mark Comalander’s season-ending shoulder injury, take on the conference’s best rushing de fense. The Hogs, who have the deepest and most consistent running attack in the SWC, take on the Owls, who possess the worst defense in the en tire space-time continuum. This game takes on anyone’s ar guments of parity in the SWC and throws them on tne trash heap with what will remain of the RiceOwls- Razorbacks 53, Owls 3.
