SWC title picture to develop
And then there were four. ...
The 1985 college football sea
son is only half finished, but the
Southwest Conference race is al
ready finished for half of the
contenders.
Houston, Texas Tech and
TCU fell out of the Cotton Bowl
picture with losses last Saturday,
giving those teams, at least, two
conference losses.
SMU and Rice stand in pre
carious positions with 1-1 con
ference records and have the
majority of the conference’s un
beaten teams still remaining on
their schedules.
And who are the unbeaten
teams?
Baylor leads the conference
with a 3-0 record, followed by
Arkansas and Texas A&M at 2-0
and Texas at 1 -0.
The inside track to the Cotton
Bowl should be established this
weekend. All of the SWC’s un-
beatens will pair off and play
one another, with A&M mosey
ing up Highway 6 to face 14th-
ranked Baylor in Waco and
Texas butting horns with No. 4
Arkansas in the Ozarks.

Sports Analysis
To the victors will come the
spoils of a little breathing room.
To the losers will come the pres
sure of must-win situations the
rest of the season.
So, who are most likely to be
the victors and the pressured
losers?
Texas at (4) Arkansas
(Razorback Stadium in Fayette
ville — 2 p.m. — ABC-TV)
The Texas offense had better
have been working overtime this
week.
After facing an Oklahoma
Sooner defense that limited
them to seven points, four first
downs and 87 yards of total of
fense, the Longhorns will now'
face the second best defensive
team in the nation this week.
And Arkansas possesses a
much more versatile offense
than what the Sooners threw. . .
excuse me, ran. . . at Texas last
weekend in Dallas.
The Longhorns have a much
better team than they showed
against the Sooners and a much
better team than anyone ex
pected in preseason forecasts,
but they’ve made their trip to the
Cotton Bowl for this season —
Razorbacks 17, Longhorns 13.
Texas A&M at (14) Baylor
(Baylor Stadium in Waco — 7
p.m.)
The “Battle of the Brazos” ap
pears to be even defensively,
with the Aggies ranking second
in the conference in total de
fense and the Bears a close third.
And while the A&M offense
leads the the SWC and Baylor
ranks seventh, the Bears have
faced the defenses of SMU,
Georgia and USC.
The Aggies have seen only
one Top 20 team’s defense, re
sulting in a 23-10 loss to Ala
bama.
For the Aggies to escape Waco
with a victory, they must avoid
the penalties that stymied them
against the Crimson Tide in
their season-opener.
For the Bears to defeat the
Aggies, they need to capitalize
on big plays, passing the ball
when the A&M secondary misses
a coverage.
Baylor doesn’t do anything
great, it just does everything
well.
A&M had superior ratings in
almost every offensive and de
fensive category, it just hasn’t
been able to put these good per
formances together on the same
night.
When consistency meets ex
plosiveness, consistency is the
safest bet. But the ’85 Aggies are
different from any other A&M
team in recent years — they’re
hard to bet against — Aggies 28,
Bears 24. ;
