Something will give in A&M-BU clash
By BRANDON BERRY
Sports Writer
Texas A&M has played one Top 20 team this season and lost, 23-10, to
Alabama. The Baylor Bears haven’t played against A&M, with both teams
sporting undefeated Southwest Conference records, since 1974. Baylor lost
to the Aggies that year, 20-0.
Something has to give, and on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Waco’s Baylor Sta
dium, it will probably be the Cotton Bowl hopes of the loser.
“Texas A&M (4-1, 2-0 in the SWC) is hot right now and so are we,” Bay
lor defensive tackle Steve Grumbine said. “Every year it seems like this is
one of the better games of the season.
“It looks like it is going to be a great race for the conference title this
year, and this game will probably have a lot to say about who’s going to the
Cotton Bowl.”
The Aggies and Bears (5-1, 3-0 in the SWC) set up the dramatic “Battle
of the Brazos” with victories last week over Houston and SMU, respectively.
The Aggies turned 150 return yards by Jimmie Hawkins, including a
32-yard interception return for a touchdown, into “instant offense”, as they
routed the Cougars, 43-16, in Kyle Field.
The Bears added another Top 20 scalp to their growing collection with
a 21-14 victory over the “Probation Ponies” from SMU.
The Baylor defense held an SMU offense, which had been averaging
304 rushing yards and 515 total yards per game, to just 150 yards rushing
and 236 total yards.
For the season, the Baylor defense ranks third in the conference (be
hind Arkansas and A&M) and yields an average of 13.8 points and 262
yards per game.
And the Bears have done it against more than formidable competition.
Baylor opened the season with a wipe-out of Wyoming, a narrow loss to
Georgia, a toppling of third-ranked Southern Cal, a thrashing of Texas
Tech, and close SWC victories over Houston and SMU.
The Aggies aren’t ranked in the Top 20, but A&M Coach Jackie Sherrill
doesn’t expect Baylor to lack emotion.
“Baylor’s defensive concepts are very solid,” Sherrill said. “Grumbine is
very physical and doesn’t lose many battles and we’ll have a little guard,
Jerry Fontenot, who doesn’t have much lead in his pants.”
Or experience under his belt.
Fontenot is a redshirt f reshman starting in place of right guard Rand)
Dausin, who will start at left tackle for the injured Louis Cheek.
“Cheek and (outside linebacker) Steve Bullitt are doubtful for Saturday,
and (safety) Lance Jackson and (linebacker) Darrell Smith are definitely
out,” Sherrill said at nis weekly press conference Tuesday.
“Naturally, when you take players away it’s a concern,” he said. “Bui,if
you’ve got a chance to win, you nave to win with the players you have."
The Bears are a perfect example of winning with tne players they have,
rather than the “blue chip” recruits that rarely grace their roster.
Baylor wins with a defense that bends, but rarely breaks and an offense
that, while not particularly flashy, has been effective in putting points on the
scoreboard.
Sherrill said the Aggies must guard against mistakes and make the Bean
earn their points the hard way.
“We can’t let them do to us what they did to Houston, Tech and SMU,
and that’s split the zone (coverage in the defensive secondaries). They made
Houston bust so many coverages, that they gave them (Baylor) 14 points.”
I^ast week, the Aggies didn’t need anything from the Cougars in rolling
over UH to their fourth straight win.
“There’s no rest for the weary,” Baylor Coach Grant Teaff said
“They’re one of the most gifted teams I’ve ever seen at Texas A&M and,in
my 14 years, I’ve seen some gifted A&M teams. They have the mostoffen
sive balance I’ve ever seen them have.
“What scares me the most is that they manhandled, and I mean man
handled, a team we barely beat. They took the team that played intheCot-
ton Bowl last year and manhandled them.”
Baylor has seen teams with impressive numbers fall into the loss column
enougn times already this season to lie scared of another opponent with fla
shy credentials.
“They’ve (the Bears) beaten Southern Cal and they’ve beaten SMU,’
Sherrill said. “They deserve their Top 20 ranking. They’re a better team
than Alabama. They have a better offense than Alabama.”
So, on Saturday night, will it be the irresistable force or the immovable
object?
“It’s going to be Baylor against Texas A&M,” Teaff said, “and laid)
that’s been quite a battle.”
