Vodka for a 68-year-old man who spent a ses sion last year at the Betty Ford Center for drug and alcohol rehabilitation? "Screwdrivers by the glass is one thing," he reasoned. "Screwdrivers by the pitcher is some thing else.” This was vintage Mitchum, typical of the irreve rence that has alternately outraged and amused the film world for 40 years. Throughout his life in the spotlight, he has remained an individualist. Other stars may perform their mea culpas in pub lic, but Mitchum remains Mitchum — unregene rated, nonapologetic, a rare and endangered species. Busted for smoking marijuana in 1948 and long considered one of Hollywood's celebrated booz ers, Mitchum surprised everyone by entering the Betty Ford Center near Palm Springs. "I went there because I fell off a ladder at the Share party (an annual benefit for mentally re tarded children)," he said. "I and the people around me were concerned that I was getting out of control and something had to be done." He didn't elaborate on the treatment at the Cen ter, but he commented: "I did meet some interest ing people there. Like the guy who had spent $750,000 a year on his cocaine habit. And the Texan who used to drink 12 cases of beer every day, Schlitz only. He was 6 feet 2 and arrived there at 122 pounds. He didn't stay. He was 130 pounds when he left." Despite his past excesses, nobody has ever ac cused Robert Mitchum of being less than profes sional. His ability to deliver a solid, convincing performance has kept him in demand for such films as "That Championship Season," and such TV miniseries as "The Winds of War." "I don't care what I play; I'll play midgets, women, anything," he once said. Despite some superior performances ("The Story of G.I. Joe," "The Night of the Hunter," "Hea ven Knows, Mr. Allison," "The Sundowners"), he has never won an Academy Award. "I think when producers have a part that's hard to cast, they say, 'Send for Mitchum; he'll do any thing,'" he shrugged. Mitchum's latest project is a family affair. He stars with son Christopher and grandson Bentley in "Fathering," a two-hour made-for-TV movie. Chris plays a man who seeks out the father who had deserted him; the discovery creates emo tional turmoil. Chris Mitchum, a solidly built man in his 40s, accompanied his father to the interview. The elder Mitchum has not assisted his son's acting career.
